TextPayMe - Eliminating the IOU

Wired: When a group of people dine out together, someone always lacks cash. They forgot to go to the ATM, but they’ll pay you back ASAP. Right. Funny, though, how people rarely forget their cell phones. Philip Yuen put these two observations together and came up with TextPayMe to let people send money using text messaging.

TextPayMe works much like PayPal - users create an online account and link it to a credit card or bank account. They can use SMS to send up to $500 a month. So handy! I just signed up. They give you $5 just for signing up and you stand a chance to win an XBOX 360!

Floating wind turbines!!

The Magenn Power Air Rotor System (MARS) is an innovative lighter-than-air tethered device that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems.

magenn wind turbine

The magenn flying wind turbine is held up by helium generating 4Kw, enough to power your needs. It costs around $10,000, but it could pay for itself in about 6 years depending on how you use it. It’s anchored by a tether that can extend up to 1,000 feet above ground. Generally, 400 feet is enough to catch the minimum 3 meters/sec wind speed needed to sustain a nice supply of electricity. No towers or heavy foundations are necessary and sizes range from small “backpack” models to large megawatt generating devices.

Bigs Bunny

Hans Wagner holds German Giant, his Bigs BunnyA man stunned onlookers at a agriculture fair in Berlin when he brought his 22lb rabbit along. Passers-by thought Hans Wagner had a large cuddly toy with him and were shocked when they discovered the 3ft 1in rabbit was real. Herman is one of a breed called the German Giant. A spokesman from the German Rabbit Breeders’ Association said: “They are good-natured, reliable and calm. They are, however, because of their size, not very suitable for children.”

Most German Giants reach between 16lb and 18lb. But Herman - who eats more than 1lb of food a day - has just kept growing. He lives in a specially-constructed hutch made of solid oak.

His owner said: “He makes a sound like thunder when he thumps along but mostly just wants to sleep. He’s as big as a five-year-old child and unlike many rabbits is really friendly. His favourite food is lettuce.”

Sony’s Memory Stick Micro to debut in March

Sony's Memory Stick MicroSony announced plans today to ship in March the first Memory Stick Micro (’M2′) products with storage capacities of 256MB, 512MB and 1GB. The new memory card is designed for mobile phones. An ‘M2′ adaptor in the size of a standard Memory Stick will allow users to exchange data to Memory Stick PRO compatible products.

The ‘M2′ media is approximately one-quarter the volume of ‘Memory Stick PRO Duo’ media, yet only about 1.2mm thick. Sony plans to ship the 256MB and 512MB versions of the ‘M2′ media from March, and the 1GB model from May 2006.

The Sony Ericsson M600i, which was also announced today, is the first mobile phone compatible with the ‘M2′.

The naughty sickie

Reuters: More British workers will call in “sick” Monday than on any other day in 2006, many opting to make their excuses by text message or by phoning in with an artistic cough or splutter, research revealed Monday.

Widespread dissatisfaction with holiday allowances combined with a post-Christmas comedown will contribute to thousands of Britons, who work some of the longest hours in Europe, staying at home to recharge their batteries.

“Early February is a very popular time for taking a ’sickie’, the first bank holiday still seems a long way off, the days are gloomy and many people are still feeling the post-Christmas blues,” said Cary Cooper, a professor of organizational psychology and health at Lancaster University, who headed the study. more…
