Stressed? Undress, then scream!

A German man has been arrested after a marriage guidance counsellor advised him to run around naked shouting at trees.

Dieter Braun (43) from Recklinghausen said the stress release technique had worked perfectly until he was arrested. He told police that venting his anger on the trees had stopped him shouting at his wife. “If I didn’t go to the woods and scream at the trees then my marriage would probably be over,” he said. He said that taking his clothes off at the same time made him feel more relaxed. “For me it’s a type of relaxation therapy. Feeling the breeze on my naked skin really calms me down.”

But local police said other visitors to the forest did not find his behaviour relaxing and have now charged him with causing a public nuisance.

Animals sacrificed to Wyeth’s hot air

Soyjoy:

An air-vent problem at one animal-testing lab has pointed to a disturbing problem with the industry as a whole. More than 500 mice died horrible suffocating deaths when a ventilator failed in 90-degree heat. Unless told otherwise, we can assume some if not most of these mice were current test subjects, meaning those tests are now ruined, meaning many more mice will have suffered and died for absolutely nothing. “Unfortunately, they had to be sacrificed,” said the Wyeth spokesman. Yep, sacrificed to your company’s incompetence. Sacrificed to your apathy. Note that Wyeth didn’t even admit to the fiasco until asked by a reporter, tipped off by animal rights activists.

But the bigger news is in this shrug-it-off quote from the “private laboratory accreditation group” that’s supposed to be monitoring conditions in animal-test labs: “I would not say this kind of thing happens frequently, but it does happen,” said John H. Miller. Oh, does it? “He declined to disclose other cases, citing confidentiality agreements with member labs, but did say Wyeth’s reported number of deaths was not unusual.” Oh really? So 500 animals needlessly dying from simple human errors is common in this industry - as is, obviously the lack of true concern or accountability among the people responsible. Apparently the only unusual thing here is the public finding out about it. Shameful.

Girl of the North Country

Well, if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she’s wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That’s the way I remember her best.

I’m a-wonderin’ if she remembers me at all.
Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

~ Bob Dylan

Secret Machines' bassist - Brandon CurtisI love this hypnotic cover tune by Secret Machines from their EP The Road Leads Where It’s Led. Secret Machines is a three piece group from Dallas. This is their funky website. “the latest link in the loose-knit chain that connects Pink Floyd, Neu, Can, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, La Dusseldorf, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Band, My Bloody Valentine, and Spiritualized.”

Hear them live in concert from Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club just 10 days ago.

New condom launched for SA’s well-endowed men

South African flagAn extra large condom that has been launched for South Africa’s well-endowed men may encourage greater condom usage and limit the spread of Aids.

Durex brand manager Stuart Roberts said there was a huge demand for larger condoms in South Africa. “A large number of South African men are bigger and complain about condoms being uncomfortable and too small,” Roberts said. The new condoms are longer and slightly wider.

The BBC News website quoted Aids activist Thandi Xolo as saying that many South African are reluctant to use condoms as they do not want to be labelled promiscuous. “This could help condoms become cool,” he said. “Men will buy them to boost their ego.”

Africa’s new patterns of migration

How can Africa move from brain drain to brain gain?

The Economist: “For Francois Pienaar, the World-Cup-winning former rugby captain, moving back to South Africa from England in 2002 was one of the best decisions he ever took. Going to Europe for a few years was a good professional move, but he missed friends and family and thought South Africa a better place to raise children. He has now become the poster boy for the Homecoming Revolution, a non-profit outfit helping South Africans living abroad to come back. Its aim, with a warning that it is not for “pessimists, racists, bigots and moaners”, is to bring talent back home. Apartheid deprived the black majority of high-quality education, leaving the country with a shortage of skills that the education system is now struggling to remedy. The brain drain of the most highly qualified has worsened the problem.

Though hardly new, emigration accelerated after the country moved to democracy in 1994 and its international isolation ended. While 70,000 South Africans are thought to have left the country in 1989-92, the estimated number ballooned to over 166,000 in 1998-2001. Some 1.4m South Africans are thought to be living in Britain alone. According to official statistics, over 16,000 highly-skilled South Africans emigrated between 1994 and 2001, but the real numbers are probably three to four times higher. Close to half of the South Africans living in rich countries have higher-education degrees. more…

The Amazing Flygun

Lessons will be taught...“The Amazing Flygun” fires a spring-powered fly swat at deadly speed, thus revolutionising household defence. Next time you see one of the winged pests heading for your jam sandwich, simply have your girlfriend shout things like “bandits at 3 o’clock”, calculate it’s trajectory, and blow the little swine out of the sky. Real adrenaline junkies can also use the “piece” to get involved with the skilled and risk-fraught activity of wasp stalking. Just be sure to have some vinegar on standby back at the field hospital.
