Evita BezuidenhoutWent to see Pieter-Dirk Uys speak about Foreign Aids at the Theatre Royal in Brighton last night. He was dazzling to watch, and brilliantly witty and funny. You may know him as Evita Bezuidenhout - the most famous woman in South Africa.

Pieter-Dirk UysFor the last few years of his life, this man, without state funding and absolutely no corporate funding, goes around to every school in South Africa that invites him to talk to the kids and young adults about the seriousness of the AIDS pandemic in South Africa. He has visited every school imaginable, from Bishops High to schools with a cow and a tree for shelter. Uys is not very popular with many parents and teachers who don’t approve of the graphic language, humour and props he uses to get his message across to kids, some as young as 6. But the reality in South Africa is that kids are using graphic language when they talk to their friends about sex; showing them how to put a condom correctly on a banana is not as relevant as using a dildo, and children even younger than 6 in SA are exposed to the deadly threat of AIDS every day of their lives. The youth of SA love him because he is hilariously funny and they can ask him any question under the sun without feeling awkward or bad. Even though the government is trying to shut him up, he is arming South Africa’s children with condoms and knowledge and is saving countless lives. I have the greatest admiration and respect for this man.

beaded AIDS ribbonAn important issue he addressed last night was WHAT is South Africa doing spending R53 BILLION on a dodgy arms deal when we have no enemies? When the only enemy we have, is silent and invisible and more devastating than we have ever known before - the Southern African AIDS pandemic. There are almost 5 MILLION HIV sufferers in SA. Why is that money not being spent on more widespread use of anti-retroviral drugs - helping HIV positive people to stay healthy so they can LIVE WITH AIDS and die with dignity?

These are my magic kitties: small, medium & large.
lick lickThese three abandoned sisters were born in South Africa so we had to bring them with us to the UK. They were found a few weeks old covered in ticks and brown dreadlocks, with wobbly legs, skinny tummies and short straight kitten tails. We had no idea they would turn out to be so beautiful! Pieter and I occasionally see a ghost kitten who looks just like them and who likes to play with Medium a lot. It travelled all the way to the UK with us and is also part of the family, but so far we havent managed to take any photos of it.

Its the Brighton Circus Festival this weekend!!
Chinese State Circus“There are three circus acts at the Preston Park circus village until Saturday 24. This weekend the three shows will come together to offer a diverse mix of bizarre and incredible live entertainment.

Marvel at the the 2,000 year old tradition of acrobatics from the Chinese State Circus, relive the spirit of the traditional Thirties village circus with the magical Jerwood Award winning Gifford’s Circus, and prepare to laugh and be amazed by the innovative Circus Space Cabaret. And for those who dare, there’s a chance to discover hidden talents for tightrope walking and other skills at a variety of circus workshops throughout the weekend.”

1/2 price ticket vouchers for the Chinese State Circus can be found in shops all around Brighton. Hunt for them! All of the magic without the animals, although dont be surprised if you see a dragon or two.

A rope bridge has been built to help dormice safely cross a busy Sussex road.
doormouse“The unique crossing, 18ft in the air, was erected after fears a new relief road would sever a 20-strong community of the furry creatures living in Anscombe Wood. Dormice are a protected species after becoming extinct in as many as seven English counties during the last century. Dr Tony Whitbread, head of conservation at the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “Dormice live in trees. If you stick a road through a large woodland you divide a population in half so it becomes untenable.”

Brighton Festival: the lift on the beach
The Giant Pineapple Boys“Having been away at the weekend I popped down to the beach after work and saw the 5065 lift - a venue which is made out of a lift on the beach, near Geminis. It’s hosting various shows all day this week, from comedians to plays and musicians and other stuff. When I went there was a woman singing what appeared to be rather gloomy love song stuff to about six people. Some shows can be viewed by entering the lift itself - pretty claustraphobic, especially if the show’s crap!”

Catch a glimpse through the 5065 lift webcam!

sexy socksA wonderful prezzie from Vampy and Niq arrived this weekend! They said I could choose anything I liked from the Fetishize~Me catalogue as a thank you for redesigning Chapel Perilous, which makes me the luckiest girl in the world. Of course I went nuts and bought sparkly fishnet thigh-highs, naughty over-the-knee with top stripes and some cotton over-the-knees. They are SO gorgeous and of the highest quality.

tadpole's promiseThe Sunday Times reviewed the Tadpoles Promise (Jeanne Willis, Tony Ross) on the 27th of April. Its about a caterpillar and tadpole that fall in love, broken pomises, pining for each other, forgiveness, tragedy and that nagging feeling of never knowing.

Where the willow meets the water, a tadpole met a caterpillar. They gazed into each other’s tiny eyes and fell in love. ‘Promise me that you will never change’, the caterpillar says.” And foolishly, the tadpole promises. But as the seasons pass and he matures, his legs grow, and then his arms - and what happens to his beautiful rainbow friend? As he sits on his lily pad, digesting the butterfly he has just eaten, he little realises that now he will never know!

I like it :)
