baduIf you haven’t yet discovered the extraordinary and wonderful talent that is Erykah Badu, then get to her site now before you waste another day. She has a unique style and stunning voice that runs right through you and makes you want to weep. Her lyrics are profound to say the least and her songs are so well put together that you can listen to them over and over again. In short, she rocks! (p.s. – can you tell I’m a fan?)

Now using ICQ anywhere in the world has become a lot easier with browser-based ICQ2go. Login to your account though a browser pop-up window and your friends list is instantly retreived from a central database. Great if you’re behind a firewall or couldn’t be bothered to install another IM.

If you want to run lots of IM’s at the same time, Trillian is everything you need. Connect to ICQ, AOL, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and IRC in a single interface. Pity it doesn’t include Odigo.

Where do you draw the line between art and psychosis? Local artists of questionable sanity in Oregon have used jelly (or jell-o) as a medium and come up with some imaginative, if disturbing creations. Among the work displayed in the Jell-o Art Show is a Barbie bloodbath and a human brain – take a look if you dare.

An extract from an error message I found on the BMG UK site…. So much for their search functionality, but at least the message put a smile on my face ;)

An Error Type 231.1 has occured: The evil Dr.Z has stolen the USS Nimitz and is holding the Western World to ransom with its nuclear capabilities. He has taken over the BMG building, filled it full of shark tanks, and is using it as his global headquarters. As he has reprogrammed our computers to re-allign satellites, we cannot find the ‘Little Trees’ Clickpage at present. We hope this will not be too much of an inconvenience…

SCAREDY CATS! I’m the first to admit that I’m ridiculously scared of the dark. But I was fascinated to find out that some people are scared of books or of laughter. No matter how quirky or embarrassing you think your personal phobia is, it’s been triggered by something and there are other people fighting the exact same thing. Take a look at the complete A-Z of phobias.

Teleporting a possibility in our lifetime? Well an Australian scientist has already figured out how to teleport a laser beam of light from one spot to another. He predicts that someone will be able to teleport a single atom within the next few years. But an entire human body? I wouldnt want to be the test subject since the laser beam was destroyed in the teleporting process.

headphonesThe music industry has come up with a simple strategy to combat illegal mp3 file sharing on the Internet: flood the file-sharing networks with files that appear to be copies of popular music, but that actually contain the wrong or altered information (spoofing), or jamming your bandwidth with multiple spoofed copies. Quite clever, but I think it’s time the music industry lightened-up and used file-sharing to their advantage in a promotional way. What are your views on mp3 file-sharing?

I recently found myself browsing through a Czech Travel Book, highlighting not only the must-sees and must-dos in Prague, but also a few handy tourist phrases. What interested me in particular was the lack of vowels in the Czech language… eg Mít knedlík v krku (To have a dumpling [frog] in your throat). Pretty cool, huh?? Admin hijacks “za” domain key

So, South Africa’s parliament has given initial approval to a law that will let the government take control of the country’s Internet address administration. Personally, I think the government’s proposal (Chapter X) stinks, so I voted against it last week.

On Thursday the administrator of South Africa’s Web addresses Mike Lawrie hid the key to the country’s “.za” domain network abroad to prevent any government interference in access to the Internet. Lawrie said he had announced his action to signal to the global Internet community that the South African domain was secure despite the controversial legislation scheduled to pass its final parliamentary hurdle next week. “If someone were to mistakenly corrupt the zone file in terms of trying to bulldoze their way in, they would not be able to do any damage,” he said.

I think he will be my hero for the day.

alice cityIn some countries they are rapidly running out of space to develop new homes for growing populations. In Japan, available surface area is at a premium, and entire underground communities such as Alice City have been planned.

Underground dwellings are usually ecologically sound and conflict minimally with the surface environment. You would be safe from natural disasters like fire and tornadoes, and well protected from the effects of a nuclear blast.

Earthship Biotecture provide environmentally-friendly homes that are constructed of natural and recycled materials. For greater protection against nuclear and biological attack Radius Engineering provides pre-cast fiberglass bunkers that are specifically designed to withstand the effects of earthquakes, tornadoes and nuclear war. Cool huh?

Discoball is one of my favourite sites, and its by a fellow South African new media designer and friend. Almost every time I visit he has changed it to something completely different. It’s a pity there isn’t an archive link anywhere on the site so you can see the other extraordinary designs he’s come up with over the last two years. Please note, it is a high-bandwidth site so you may wait a while for the site to load. You will also need the Flash 6 Player to view the site.
