Music to help you go slowly insane

Mmmmmmm… The Magnetic Fields. His velvety delicious voice and simple lyrics caramel coat each bitter pill.

Check it out in full screen on YouTube.

I really love this animation a fan did for her favourite song
I Don’t Wanna Get Over You

Thanks Pieter.

Musicovery Web Radio

A brilliant way to discover new music or old haunts based on your mood. A personal song list is strung together for you by genre and decade in small clusters. Each colour represents a different genre, and you can dig even deeper by selecting your mood.

Musicovery!

Bring back the feeling - create a Muxtape!

create a mixtapeAnd listen to other’s. Its a glorious mixed bag of musical goodness! I love the idea behind this site and the simple way it works. You can easily share music with friends or your blog readers if that’s your thing. I simply prefer being immersed in a lot of old and new sounds I haven’t heard of yet. A great way to shake out of a stagnating music habit.

Yesterday I was all about the acoustic and live mixtapes. Right now I’m mostly listening to AcidInjection’s muxtape so I can keep sharply focussed on a tricky project I’m working on.

Please post your favourite findings in the comments and the ones you’ve made so we can all enjoy!

Repost: indietronica

(Because I screwed up the track link last time. Weirdly this was posted a year ago to the day!)
Felix LabandMore and more gorgeous progressive sounds are coming out of South Africa these days. If you’re a fan of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada or múm, you might have already heard of Felix Laband… but just in case you haven’t, you’re going to love this:

Felix Laband - Whistling in Tongues

I get goosebumps from the drums near the end. Gets me all riled up!

I loved this track so much I couldn’t stop myself from buying his album. It’s infectious, delicious perfection.

Amazon.com rolls out DRM-free music store globally as iTunes cries like a baby

NO DRMThat’s right! Amazon recently finished signing all four major record labels to its MP3 music store and said it would begin rolling out the online service internationally this year. Amazon’s Music Store is now free of digital rights management technology, which means the audio files can be played on any portable player through any mp3 media player. At last! Besides offering flexibility in playing tunes, Amazon.com is also trying to lure customers away from rivals with price. Apple sells individual tracks for 99 cents and albums for $9.99, but Amazon.com offers a third of its inventory at 89 cents a track. Albums cost from $5.99 to $9.99.

Amazon.com is hoping consumers will turn to it instead of iTunes or Microsoft’s Zune store in order to take advantage of a more open format. And I have a strong feeling as iTunes catches on this will naturally encourage a massive surge in legal mp3 purchases and be a life-saving move for the music industry as a whole.

La Vida de Vagabundos Americanos

I have a bit of an obsession with The Dead Man Street Orchestra - a close group of hobos / musical gypsy’s who catch rides on freight trains across the country and play their hearts out on the streets for fun. If you’re living in the warm South this winter you might be lucky enough to stumble on them.

I don’t think I could just go travelling with these guys for a few months and ever be the same again. The photos promise that.

This lifestyle is contagious - check out this amazing gallery I found of other kids travelling by train. When I first came across these pics I thought they were the Deadman Street Orchestra but an anonymous commenter helped me out.

Wishing I was here...

Musical influences:
“Beans, Rum, home made instruments, trash percussion, gypsy fiddle, sing a longs, old folks, trampin folks, young folks, workin folks, bums who ride for free, free time, free music, free morning coffee, rollin cigerettes, tuning A quarter 1/2 step sharp, loveable black and red dogs, back porches, sushi, and beans, a cold beer in a hot boxcar, and a tune ya just wanta play all day…”

The entire Dead Man Street Orchestra album is available in mp3’s and won’t cost you a single bean of course! Recorded in the woods at Mutant Fest this year.
