A backpack that converts into a home!

With a whole new wilderness walking adventure on the horizon I’m looking into really simple ultra-lightweight backpacking solutions. With a relatively petite build and the need to carry my own sleeping bag, mat and possibly a tent, with food for 5 days as well as the usual gear, its essential to pack the absolute essentials and to try to find items that are not only light but have multi uses.

I already have a huge sweet spot for useful gadgets and gear that morph into something else I need, and I will be bringing a Light My Fire Spork, but the Powerpac 2000 System takes first prize! Such an incredible invention. It’s a pack that uses your ground pad and sleeping bag and converts onto a shelter. I am SO blown away…

Ultra light backpack, sleeping bag and shelter solution

This link shows pictures of everything you can pack into it and how it looks with your shelter erected, but perhaps the best way to understand how it works is to check out this link which is the more stripped down gearskin version.

Make camp or break camp in a minute. Your gear is bundled together — no separate stuffing, rolling, or bagging your camp. Eliminates empty spots in pack and condenses your gear making it easier to carry.

Best of all, the whole system can weigh in at as little as 5lb if you opt for ultra-light bivy, closed-cell foam pad, and an ultra-light sleeping bag. Using standard backpacking gear, you’d probably be looking at 3lb for a pack, 5lb for a tent, 2lb for a sleeping bag, and 1lb for a pad — a whopping 11 pounds for those four items alone.

AQUS Toilet System

There are so many innovative and easy ways to save the earth’s fast dwindling fresh water supplies by reusing grey water in your home. Take this amazing contraption for example:

Redirect the grey water from your sink to flush your toilet

The AQUS System is an innovative water conservation device. Simple to install in almost any bathroom and requiring minimal maintenance, the AQUS is hardly noticeable. In a 2-person home the AQUS typically saves 10-20 gallons per day, or 5,000 gallons per year, of metered fresh water.

Non-toxic Cleaning Services For Your Home

Feeling the Spring Cleaning bug? For those of us who are growing more sensitive to household cleaning chemicals and others who are determined to keep those nasties and fumes away from their children and homes, there are eco cleaning services available:

Maid Brigade – green cleaning service with over 400 locations nationwide that use non-toxic cleaning chems and reusable microfiber pads instead of disposable ones (about $110, depending on area and house size), among other eco-friendly fixes.

Yelp – type in your location and “green cleaning” to find a local green maid service.

Want to do it yourself? Here is Ideal Bite’s list of top eco-cleaning products. Our family has completely replaced all our crusty chemical ridden cleaning products with shiny new eco friendly ones. You’ll be amazed how ridiculously delicious these products smell and how incredibly well they work! Bear in mind that every chemical you pour down your sink or flush down the toilet gets back into your water supply. Isn’t it time to start trying the alternatives?

Bring back the feeling – create a Muxtape!

create a mixtapeAnd listen to other’s. Its a glorious mixed bag of musical goodness! I love the idea behind this site and the simple way it works. You can easily share music with friends or your blog readers if that’s your thing. I simply prefer being immersed in a lot of old and new sounds I haven’t heard of yet. A great way to shake out of a stagnating music habit.

Yesterday I was all about the acoustic and live mixtapes. Right now I’m mostly listening to AcidInjection’s muxtape so I can keep sharply focussed on a tricky project I’m working on.

Please post your favourite findings in the comments and the ones you’ve made so we can all enjoy!

Craiglist stoner thanks pizza guy for best pizza ever

What a gem! The original can be found here.

To The Stoner Who Works At Cottage Inn Pizza

You: the guy who answers the phone at cottage inn pizza
Me: Hungry and stoned out of my gourd

I called you from my cell phone but had completely forgot who I was calling by the time you answered the phone. Of course, you were also baked to bajeezus and forgot to tell me that I had called Cottage Inn.

When you answered and said, “Whatsup?” I thought about it, and after a 20 second pause I told you that was hungry. You suggested I try a pizza, and I agreed that it was probably a good idea.

Then I asked you if you sold pizza and you said that you could make me one. I said I wanted anchovies and something else on my pizza. You asked me what that something else was.

We spent five minutes listing toppings until we figured out that I was trying to remember how to say: “Sun dried Tomatoes.” When you said: “We’ll bake that right up for you,” we both started laughing uncontrollably.

It was the best pizza I ever had; I just wanted to thank you for helping me out.

* Location: The One By Jimmy-Johns

Thanks Julie!

Felix LabandMore and more gorgeous progressive sounds are coming out of South Africa these days. If you’re a fan of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada or múm, you might have already heard of Felix Laband… but just in case you haven’t, you’re going to love this:

Felix Laband – Whistling in Tongues

I get goosebumps from the drums near the end. Gets me all riled up!

I loved this track so much I couldn’t stop myself from buying his album. It’s infectious, delicious perfection.

Web Designers Guide to Pre-Installed Fonts for Windows, Mac and Linux

Web designers often feel that they are restricted to a basic set of core web fonts. This small set of fonts has been widely distributed most designers stick to them, just to be on the safe side. However, when you look at the fonts available on the three most widely used operating systems, you can see that this really isn’t necessary.

All three operating systems come with a variety of fonts, many of which can be reasonably substituted for each other without affecting the design. You can also choose fonts that have the same look and feel that you want, but may not be close matches. This allows for much more flexibility in design while still ensuring compatibility across operating systems…

Moss and Pixie’s School Bus Conversion

The Enchanted Gypsy is one of the most beautifully crafted family homes I’ve ever seen, and an extraordinarily wonderful way to live. A dream life and a life’s dream for me… so inspiring! I literally can’t wait to get started on building and lovingly customising my own bus home to absolute perfection, painting the outside with dreams… and of course, never forgetting to change the bus destination sign as we embark on each new adventure.

Here are my favourite pictures of the interior and exterior:
