Inspiring design for web

wild about walesMy ex-boss at Designate Advertising – David Bee – has always created front-end designs that are simply inspirational to me. They aren’t only exquisite to look at but a lot of strategy goes into the site usability tailored specifically for the target audience as well. I was lucky enough to work under him for so many years and to have learnt an infinite amount of valuable skills and techniques that put me well on my way to run my own successful business.

His latest group of designs are for the South West Wales Tourism Partnership and were produced by the team at Designate.

The last two even have unique designs every time the season changes. Check them out and explore what Wales has to offer. Wales is breathtakingly beautiful with holidays and adventures for everyone.

A fantastic job all round Designate!

The verdict’s in: men don’t fancy funny women

The Independent: While it is well known among men that women are attracted to funny men even if they look like boiled frogs, apparently, research shows men find female wits a turn-off.

Research to be published this week in a leading academic journal “Evolution and Human Behaviour” confirms what many female comics – and funny women – have long suspected: men are frightened by their brand of humour. While men might chuckle at the odd gag, when it comes to finding a long-term companion they do not want a partner who will fire a stream of witty repartee at them. And this is according to the study carried out by academics at some of the world’s top universities. “Men see being funny as a male thing,” explained Dr Rod Martin, who led the project.

Russia plans to put a mine on the Moon to help boost energy supply

you've just been mooned! The Independent: Russia has staked out plans to recapture its Soviet-era space-race glory and start mining the Moon for a promising energy resource that scientists say could meet the Earth’s power needs for more than a thousand years.

Nikolai Sevastyanov, head of Russia’s giant Energia Space Corporation, has unveiled plans to build a permanent base on the Moon within a decade and to start mining the planet for helium 3, a sought-after isotope, by 2020.

The curse of Stonehenge will remain until it is handed back to the druids

StonehengeGuardian Unlimited: “Stonehenge may be vital for national security but, as a world heritage site, it is a national disgrace. Consultants have made millions but achieved nothing in 20 years.

I have attended many Stonehenge consultations. They are raving madhouses. The sanest people present are the pendragons, druids, warlocks, Harry Potters, sons of the sun and daughters of the moon. They have a clear use for the stones and speak English. Weirdness sets in with Wiltshire county councillors, health-and-safety officers and archaeologists, all of whom think the stones are theirs as of right. But for total extragalactic dottiness, nothing tops the Ministry of Defence. It moves only in twos, each official with a soldier doppelganger at his side.” ~ Simon Jenkins

Man lives in tree after domestic spat with wife

Kapila and his treehouseBBC News:“No amount of coaxing can make him leave his tree house,” says a local resident. Even during a devastating cyclone in 1999 when winds of 300 km/h destroyed large parts of Orissa and killed thousands, Kapila continued to live in the forest.

London Soundtrack by The Crystal Method

Listen to the full CD soundrack from the movie as a streaming mp3 off winamp.com. You’ll need the free winamp player if you don’t have it already.

“L.A.’s Crystal Method have been referred to as America’s answer to the Chemical Brothers. A dance-based electronic duo with a definite rock band feel, the comparison would seem appropriate, although it tends to erase what makes the group distinct: a solid base in American hip-hop, rock, soul, and pop.”

The 5th Annual No Pants Subway Ride

A coordinated flash mob of 160 passengers took off their pants and rode the New York subway on Sunday. It even made MSNBC Countdown’s top news story (11MB mov). 25 people were arrested halfway through but that didn’t stop the fun.

Crochet tips anyone?

Okay, I’ve finished my knitted blanket and now I want to crochet a wide border around the edges. I dont want anything too frilly or fussy though. Can anyone recommend some really good “learn to crochet” sites and perhaps some more with amazing patterns around the same quality as knitty.com?

I ♥ men who can knit!

Reuters: If you’re stuck for entertainment in New York on a Friday night, and as long as you’re man enough, try learning to rib at “Boyz Nite” at a Greenwich Village venue from 9 until late.

Josh Bennett knits at a Greenwich Village knitting shop in New York

Knit New York, a wool and craft store in Lower Manhattan, is fighting the stereotype that knitting is the province of women. “Are you strong enough to knit and man enough to purl?” says an advertisement for Boyz Nite on the shop’s Web site. A sign on the street outside invites passersby to come in and bring their own beer: “Boyz Nite. 9 pm – ?? BYOB.”

The store draws dozens of men to its weekly men’s night where beginners and experts gather to exchange tips over beer and hot dogs. more…

Pirate Bay for all your naughty needs (well most of them)

“It’s the Google Zeitgeist of crime” says Wired.

Arrr!Nathan told me about The Pirate Bay – the world’s largest, legal, BitTorrent tracker. You can pretty much find any bit of software, games, music as well, even full version software with cracks, serials and activation keys, without worrying about those pesky popup windows or porn ads while browsing your options. Simply search for what you need and use any one of a number of free pieces of BitTorrent software to download the files. Of course actually downloading and enjoying copywrited material without paying for it or asking permission is completely illegal… but knowing where to find it isn’t.

In case you were wondering, Bittorrent is a filesharing protocol that in a reliable way enables big and fast file transfers. As you can imagine, Pirate Bay have received legal threats from big corporations like Microsoft, Dreamworks, SEGA, Apple etc, but since only torrent files are saved on their server, no copyrighted or illegal material are stored by them, so its not possible to hold them responsible for simply linking to servers that do store the material. Proprietor Fredrik Neij insists that Pirate Bay is perfectly legal under the copyright law in Sweden, where it’s based, and its continued existence lends credence to that claim.

The site has a clean look, advanced search and support for 10 languages, its open to everyone and it’s free. Tempted?

Teflon Kills

Ting! Basquwaak! The good people at AskMen.com, along with my dearest mother, tell me that Teflon is a bad idea. Reportedly, Teflon’s miracle coat contains “ammonium perfluorooctanoate (more commonly known as C-8), which has been linked to cancer, organ damage and other negative health effects in laboratory animals.”

Besides, a good iron skillet doubles as a defense mechanism in the event that a cartoon rabbit might try and break in to your house.

Grizzly Man

Wow this film looks amazing…

view the trailer

GRIZZLY MAN is a docudrama that centers on amateur grizzly bear expert Timothy Treadwell who journeyed to Alaska to study and live with the bears for 13 summers. Acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of Timothy Treadwell who lived unarmed among the bears, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell’s remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly.

Check out the unbelievable trailer and here’s the official website.

Thanks to Shawn for telling me about it.
