I am completely gobsmacked!

book cover

“The book appears to date from the 30s.

It has been pointed out that in view of the fact that the book contains photos of both Sandow and his Daughter it is possible that the only ‘discovery’ that Capt. Rodrigues made was to discover a copy of one of Sandow’s books. Other than that he advocates little or no Physical Exercise, just ‘Posture’.

It is equally possible that this booklet was also a weak excuse to publish photos of naked pubescent females that would otherwise have been banned. You decide.”

Mothers Against Noise

M.A.N. Website

M.A.N logo“WHAT IS NOISE?
Noise is music that uses unpleasant or painful or extremely loud or discordant sound. Noise is also a very dangerous musical trend that is hell bent on destroying civilized culture, this anti-cultural movement is quickly sweeping the globe, and is very dangerous to our youth.”

Seriously, you won’t believe what you’ll read on there. Even more seriously, this site seems to be completely real.

Insert cheesy title

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Cheese

The age old myth that cheese gives you nightmares has finally been laid to rest this week following the release of a new study carried out by the British Cheese Board. The in-depth Cheese and Dreams study, a first of its kind, reveals that eating cheese before bed will not only aid a good night’s sleep but different cheeses will in fact cause different types of dreams.

New Stuff!

yummy wakameYummy’s blog has just been upgraded to WordPress 2.0!
Please let me know if you discover any issues or problems using the site. Unfortunately the little formatting buttons above the comment form don’t work with the new version but I’m hoping to fix that at some stage.

I’ve also added some new features to the right hand side: a working archive and a recent comments list. Also the really old archived yummy posts from 2002 onwards are now available if you feel like taking a dig around.

Nathan and Tristan playing SuperMario Sunshine

Nathan: Tristan, stop grabbing the controller. You’re gonna kill us all!
Tristan: But I want a go.
Nathan: No.
Tristan: Yes! GIVE me the controller! It’s my turn!
Nathan: No.
Tristan: But… whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy……
Nathan: TRISTAN! I need you to understand that sometimes the skills that pay the bills are the ones that give the most thrills.

Zeitgeist

“It turns out that looking at the aggregation of billions of search queries people type into Google reveals something about our curiosity, our thirst for news, and perhaps even our desires. Considering all that has occurred in 2005, we thought it would be interesting to study just a few of the significant events, and names that make this a memorable year.” – Google Zeitgeist

Actually, the results show a sad state of the world, with the top ten news searches being primarily composed of celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Michael Jackson (Janet Jackson tops off the list, even higher than Hurricane Katrina).

Sleep is the new black

Time-poor high-flyers who used burn their money on luxury items they didn’t have the space in their schedule to enjoy, are now spending $25,000 on a bed that can help them get the most out of the few hours they manage to allocate to sleep.

They never knew that sleep was the greatest luxury, they always thought the greatest luxury item was a thing parked in the garage or the great trip they went on three or four times a year,” said Marian Salzman, consumer trend analyst. “They never knew that a good night’s sleep–that eight hours of slumber–was the ultimate.”

I saw this bed on CBS News – it never wears out because you sleep on a layer of plastic pins that mould around your body – but they never mentioned the product name so I can’t link to the site. Does anyone know what it’s called?

Happiness – the secret to success

Guardian Unlimited: Happiness, rather than working hard, is the key to success, according to research published today. The findings suggest that happiness is not a “feelgood” luxury, but is essential to people’s wellbeing. What is more, happiness can also extend across an entire nation, with people in “happy” nations being more likely to have pro-democratic attitudes and a keenness to help others.

“There was strong evidence that happiness leads people to be more sociable and more generous, more productive at work, to make more money, and to have stronger immune systems,” said Prof Lyubomirsky.

“Our work suggests that sad people should try to increase the frequency of positive emotions in their lives by doing things that make them feel happy, even temporarily,” said Prof Lyubomirsky, whose research is published in the Psychological Bulletin today. If you can raise your spirits, the benefits can be manifold. “Happy people are more likeable and more sociable. They are also better able to cope with stress and likely to be healthier and live longer.”

An unaired shippet from Countdown. NSFW!

Thanks Kenna

Countdown has been appealing to wordsmiths and number-crunchers on UK TV for over 20 years. Did you know that ‘Richard’ is not really ‘Richard Whiteley’s first name – it’s John. And the youngest contestant to appear was 8-year-old James Squire, in 1992. The oldest contestant was 87 year old Bertha Bourne, in 1994.

Google finally unveils Gmail for mobiles

Gmail Mobile allows you to check your Gmail from your mobile. Gmail’s web interface is really useful for mobile phones since it won’t mean downloading your mail just to see what’s there. And using nothing but your phone’s browser you can view Word documents and PDF files thanks to their attachment converting services. It includes some of Gmails other nifty functions like a frequently mailed contacts list.

Another reason to go Accessible

Did you know that building your site to comply with the W3C’s Content Acessibility Guidelines has another hidden benefit? High accessibility overlaps heavily with effective white hat Search Engine Optimisation. Your site will not only be highly spiderable for search engines and accessible to people with disabilities, but it will also be completely accessible to devices that connect to the internet, such as handhelds and cellphones. It’s the way forward. If you’re going to go to a lot of trouble and expense, make sure you build your site to last.

If you need to redesign your site to comply with A, AA or even the strictest AAA Accessibility standards, contact me.

Nathan’s Mini Me on the finer points of bathing

Olivia: Okay, time for your bath.
Tristan: No.
O: Yes.
T: No.
O: Yes, every day you need to get a bath. And guess what? You’re going to have one right now.
*dead silence*
T: When I grow up, I’m going to make my own rules.
O: Yep. You can make up new rules every day, just like your dad.
T: And I’ll only have baths every few days. And maybe I won’t bath at all.
O: You can do that if you like, but your girlfriends will think you smell funny, laugh at you and run away.
T: Not if I bath. Then I’ll smell nice.
O: Ahuh. Then they’ll think you’re really handsome.
T: Girls think that anyway.

Cars are Killing Us, Says New York

“A strike by New York City transit workers tomorrow could put ride sharing to the ultimate stress test. The city will reportedly bar any vehicle with less than four passengers (sorry Miata owners) from going through tunnels or over bridges into the city. ” – Wired Magazine

So the bus drivers and subway operators of NYC are striking, and in an effort to prevent mass chaos and the city literally piling up on top of itself, the city has declared that it won’t let any cars with less than four people enter the city.

The Wired Article sums it up, but here’s the full story if anyone’s interested.
