Kent Walking Festival site launched

A new addition to my portfolio! This one was quite a challenge as it had to be AAA Accessible yet still visually appealing. (I’ve also never built an accessible site before). I found the only way to achieve both was to create the site entirely in valid CSS. The resulting code is streamlined and the site seems to render correctly on mac, pc and all the browsers I could find. The site has a content management back-end too.

If you’re interested in accessible website design, take a look at the accessibility features for the kent walking festival site. If you’re a web designer, there’s no escaping it. You’ll end up building an accessible site eventually, as it’s all heading that way. I throughly recommend Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 – this very slick upgrade seems entirely geared towards accessible design, where the previous version failed.

I’ve learn so much from producing this site and plan to eventually design all my new sites with accessibility in mind. Just because it has to be accessible, shouldn’t mean good design has to suffer. Give it a bash and you’ll see what I mean!

Olivia.mp3 (4.7 MB)
“A very chilled out track that I wrote for my sister…Inspired by Kruder and Dorfmeister, Tosca and Peace Orchestra…” ~ Kenneth

It got a sizzling 4-star review by Electromancer:

“When you wear your influences on your sleeve, you’ve either gotta be supremely confident in your abilities or completely stupid! WHAT?!?! Our friend TwickSisted here is influenced by a couple of artists whom I think are absolutely AWESOME … K+D Sessions happens to be one of my most favourite albums. Kruder & Dorfmeister as a duo & also individually with their various other projects have for many years been making extremely GROOVY music …

… and so is the music made by TwickSisted. ‘Olivia’ is a very funky slab of chilled-out shuffling breakbeat. The production is a cut above the rest … very clear, crisp & precise, with some excellent noises goin on. In particular I reckon the slap bass that drives the track along is wicked, it really gives this tune a strong & funky identity.

‘Olivia’ begins very much in a K&D vein with some luverly plucked string sounds & some spacey swoony synths goin on in the depths of the mix, which ebb n’ flow up & down as the track grooves along. There’s a gradual build up before the b-line comes in, followed by an excellent shuffling breakbeat … the beats, as well as the b-line, are spot on & complement one another very well.

The artist has put a lot of effort into crafting this piece of music. Although it revolves around a fairly small set of samples for the whole duration of the track, the various breakdowns, beat changes & chill-out moments keep your ears locked onto this rather luverly noise. This is a track that should be added to everyone’s favourites folder … check it out, NOW!”

Happy St. George’s Day England!! St George’s Day is Englands national day, but unlike other countries, England does not have celebration to mark this occasion. I wonder why? At least you get the day off work!

England's FlagSt. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England. It was adopted by Richard The Lion heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king’s soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

Union FlagYou heard it here first:
The flag for the United Kingdom is called the Union Flag, not the Union Jack. The only time the name Union Jack applies is when its flown on the jackstaff on a warship.

London UndergroundLondon Underground ghost stations
Eery but fascinating! The level of detail is astonishing.

“One of the things I find most interesting is the changing history of the railway, of which there is still much hidden evidence. For example, look through the window as you travel between Tottenham Court Road and Holborn on the Central Line and you’ll see a station – where no passengers have alighted since 1932. This used to be British Museum station.”

There are about 40 abandoned stations on the Underground network along its entire 255 miles (408Km) of trackway – some subsurface and some above ground. Some have vanished without trace whereas others are almost intact, grimey time capsules of the era when they were closed.

Goldfish placed in sling

goldfishNews.com.au: Customers at the Sky Port diner near Schenectady came up with the idea of a creating a fish sling after Dick the 17-year-old goldfish fell ill in November and had difficulty swimming. Dick could barely move across the bottom of his fish tank located behind the counter.

Dick was likely suffering from swim bladder disease and prescribed a diet of cooked peas to be hand fed to Dick three times a day. To remedy Dick’s swimming problem, several customers devised a sling made up of fishing bobbers, drinking straws, gauze and string. When the fish is placed in the sling, he’s able to swim like normal.

Sherman said customers find it relaxing to sit at the counter and watch Dick in his tank. “Everybody’s rooting for him,” she said on Wednesday. “He’s the topic of conversation at the Sky Port.”

mobile phone“Toothing” is a new craze where strangers on trains, buses, in bars and even supermarkets hook up for illicit meetings using messages sent via the latest in phone technology.

It is made possible by Bluetooth technology which allows users to send phone contacts, pictures and messages to other Bluetooth-enabled equipment over a range of about 10 metres (yards). Users discovered they could send anonymous messages to people they didn’t know with Bluetooth equipment, spawning a craze dubbed “bluejacking”. Potential toothers begin by sending out a random greeting — usually “Toothing?”.

Musical Canine FreestyleThe latest dance craze – Musical Canine Freestyle
In order to dance with your dog(s) to music, there are some simple basic procedures that you should follow. First, you start by selecting a musical composition to which you would like to dance. It may be one particular piece or you may edit several different pieces of music to create your own special music. Once you have the music, the second step is choreographing a routine to your music. This means you should design steps and movements for yourself and your dog(s) to execute that relate to the music you have selected. They may be comprised of basic obedience steps, variations on obedience steps, dressage movements, tricks or any new step you may create. It is important to plan the steps and movements within a defined area, covering the area as fully as possible. The third step is selecting costuming for you and your dog(s). Your outfits should coordinate with the theme of the music you have selected and be pleasing to an audience.
They’ve got the videos to prove it too!

sealCanada embarks on mass seal hunt
Canadian sealers have pushed out to sea for the largest cull in 50 years despite protests by environmentalists and animal rights groups.

Around 140,000 seals are expected to be slaughtered by the end of today.

The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed, arguing that the campaign is ecologically sound because “an estimated 5.2 million harp seals in the North Atlantic at present – and commercial fish stocks were vanishing.”

The IFAW says government guidelines on humane hunting methods are being ignored. “We filmed and witnessed seals being skinned alive right in front of us. We saw live seals being dragged while conscious across the ice with boat hooks; we saw stockpiles of dead and dying seals. It was really horrific.”
