Helping Hands LogoHelping Hands – Monkey Helpers for the Disabled
I used to think this was a spoof site, but its a real charity. The total cost of breeding, training, and placing a monkey helper, with a life span of 30-40 years, is $25,000. In comparison, the cost of preparing a Seeing Eye dog with a 10-year life span is $21,000.

waterOil and water do mix!
Australian National University chemistry professor Richard Pashley has discovered a way to mix oil and water, which contradicts the age-old proverb. The secret? – you have to take the gases out of the water first, mainly oxygen and nitrogen. Then oil and water mix spontaneously and stay that way for a long time.

Until the discovery, oil and water could only be mixed with the addition of detergents. Removing the gases was not difficult, and industry had been taking oxygen out of water for many years to make it less corrosive. There are many potential commercial applications, especially for injectable drugs that are now dissolved in water with detergents added that sometimes caused side effects. A US perfume manufacturer which found some customers were allergic to the detergents it used to dissolve its fragrance agents in water is also interested.

Nile Crocodile found lazing in Pretoria pool, South Africa

wind up crocodile toyA reptile enthusiast investigating a call from a man he thought “had been drinking”, found a metre-long Nile crocodile lazing in the pool of a Pretoria suburb. How the reptile, with razor-sharp teeth, made its way into a residential swimming pool still remains a mystery as they are not indigenous to the Pretoria area.

(The crocodile wind-up toy can be bought here)

Gong Xi Fa Cai! According to the Chinese Zodiac, it’s the year of the monkey.

Chinese for monkey“Astrologers predict it will be an extremely progressive, upbeat time, full of exhilirating successes. What’s even better is that it should be a relative breeze. Apparently good old monkey will carry us along with his natural exuberant energy. Be warned though, you may feel the urge to speculate, gamble and explore risky but inventive alternative. Stay on your toes as there could be trickery from the influence of the monkey.” ~ This is Brighton Magazine

Caravanners are people too
“I’ve lost count of the number of times drivers have shouted ‘Move Over Grandad’ to Bob which is particularly hurtful as we don’t have children. Often they are even ruder and sometimes resort to swearing. Every trip our lives are put at risk by impatient motorists who overtake us in the most foolhardy of places.”

Our campaign to secure equality and respect for caravanners:
We have decided that Saturday June 5th will be our day of action when we are urging our supporters and friends across the UK to take to the roads and stick to a 30mph limit. A key part of our campaign will be our M25 ‘Go Slow’. We are hoping we will get enough support to completely fill the slow lane of the M25 with caravanners thus encircling the capital in a ‘Ring of Aluminium’ – and what could make our point more eloquently.

See what people have added to the guestbook!

A List Apart – “For people who make websites”

Here are some ALA articles which I highly recommend:

How to create the perfect 404 page
“No matter how carefully you design and structure your site, visitors will sometimes request missing, moved, or non-existent pages. A well tempered 404 error page will plunge these visitors back into the flow of your site.”

How to create Faux Columns with CSS
“It’s a beginning CSS designer’s nightmare and a frequently asked question at ALA: Multi-column CSS layouts can run into trouble when one of the columns stops short of its intended length. Here’s a simple solution.”

Embedding Flash While Supporting Standards
“I’ve worked with Flash for several years and have always been slightly dissatisfied with the markup needed to embed a movie in web pages. When I recently published a site in XHTML, my dissatisfaction with the markup grew as I realized that it simply wasn’t valid in this context and was bloating my pages to unacceptable levels. A leaner, standards-compliant method of embedding Flash movies was called for.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Brazil detains U.S. airline crew after pilot makes obscene gesture
The pilot raised his middle finger at police to protest new Brazilian security measures that require U.S. citizens to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entering the South American country.

Brazil implemented the policy on January 1 in retaliation for a similar U.S. program that requires those foreign visitors who need visas to have their fingerprints and pictures taken on arrival in the United States.

U.S. citizens have been subject to long lines at Brazilian airports since the new security measures were implemented, prompting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to complain that Americans were being discriminated against. With Rio de Janeiro’s famous Carnival coming in February, the city is worried about the impact on tourism. It has taken to handing out roses and “Rio Loves You” T-shirts to U.S. visitors and Wednesday laid on hip-wriggling Samba dancers at its airport arrival gate. Eager to speed up the process, Brazil rushed to gather digital fingerprint readers from police stations across the country to register U.S. visitors in “30 seconds” rather than the hours it takes with an ink pad.

New Jersey is about to pass a law making human cloning legal
“The New Jersey state assembly on Monday by a 41-31 vote passed one of the most radical human cloning legalization bills ever proposed. If the bill is signed by the governor, as is expected, it will be legal in New Jersey to implant cloned human embryos into wombs, allow the baby to grow for nine months, and then destroy the unborn child for research.

The bill prohibits the use of human cloning for reproductive purposes, but allows cloning to create unborn children only to be killed — either early after their creation for their stem cells or at any time before their birth. Body parts could be taken through all nine months of pregnancy, and abortions up to the day of delivery would be authorized.

Advocates of cloning and embryonic stem cell research said their bill was about compassion towards others by helping to find cures to diseases. Many say the use of adult stem cells provides a more ethical and effective alternative.

New Jersey is about to be put on the map as a thriving market for fetal stem-cell parts.”
