David BlaineDavid Blaine is half a century too late.

In 1952, hypnotist Jack Wafer hid away in Queens Road, Brighton, and starved himself for 76 days, nearly twice as long as David’s attempt of 44 days. The Times says he survived for 76 days in a glass case in Brighton on only soda water and cigarettes. Members of the public paid a shilling to watch him. Could that be where they get the expression ‘wafer thin’ from?

I just discovered flambingo – a fellow Brightoner who also blogged this. Lots of good stuff there!

Flash Mobbing
“On September 1, more than 200 strangers crowded into a Burger King in Auckland, New Zealand. They stood silently for a moment, avoiding eye contact with baffled staff, then began simultaneously mooing for exactly 60 seconds. They then cheered, applauded the staff and left.

mobile phoneThe concept: a mob of hundreds appears from nowhere, performs a surreal act and then dissappears in the blink of an eye – all organised by anonymous individuals via the internet and mobile phones.” ~ This Is Brighton Magazine

Czech scientist Jaroslav Flegr of Charles University in Prague told Reuters his research showed a parasite called toxoplasma gondii in cats, rabbits or raw meat, may make women reckless and friendly while making men jealous and morose.

Just contracting the bug might not be life-threatening but infected women behind the wheel can be fatal, and those out for a stroll in busy traffic may be a hazard, he said. “It is not much fun. Our research has shown that toxoplasmosis raises 2.6 times the risk of a traffic accident by prolonging the reaction time of infected people,” he said. “It is not only about driving accidents but also about the probability of being run over by a car.”

Flegr said his research shows men infected by the bug tend to be quiet, withdrawn, suspicious, jealous and dogmatic. He said he could not find a reason for the different reactions.

The illness could be responsible for up to one million of deaths on the roads worldwide, making it one of the deadliest parasitic diseases, second only to malaria, he said.

Found on the ChapelHubby Clones Wife
Dmitri Ivanov secretly cloned his cancer-riddled wife Katrina in 1965, in an experiment that seemed to end happily when he married the dead woman’s genetic duplicate just days after she turned 18. But the brilliant scientist’s love for his look-alike bride soon grew cold. In 1985, Ivanov dumped her and made yet another clone of her dead sister. Then he waited patiently until the second clone turned 18 last March before marrying her.

Details of Ivanov’s experiments are sketchy, but sources in Moscow say the scientist ran Russia’s cloning laboratory until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Records suggest that the expert authorized and participated in the cloning of at least 300 humans.

Ivanov’s first clone bride, Elina Kolokov, is believed to be housed in a government psychiatric facility ‘recovering from the shock.’”

Graham points out – New electronic paper displays video too

Philips says the prototypes it has developed of electronic ink displays have paper-like viewing characteristics with excellent contrast.“Hot on the heels of the invention of a wafer-thin foldable screen that can display static type and may one day replace newspapers as it can be overwritten each day, scientists at Philips Research in Eindhoven have found a way to display high-definition moving pictures as well. Using a process called electrowetting, the scientists claim to be able to manipulate colored oils in the pixels on the page with such speed and accuracy as to be able to generate clear and accurate video displays.”

“With an e-paper screen sewn into a jacket, wearers could read e-mail or even watch the news on their sleeves while hot-footing it from one meeting to another.”

bigwhaleonalorry.com has become a book!
The Barnsley Whale – the true story of the world’s first inland whale hunt” by Mainstream Publishing at £9.99. It includes Steve’s voyage to Brighton’s Fishing Museum and Sea Life Aquarium.

“Join me on an epic voyage of discovery that will drive you onto the shores of madness and brave seas of uncertainty where fact is far stranger than fiction. Meet football fans, fishermen, Vikings, billionaires, miners, saints and people who shout into mobile phones. Encounter weird and wonderful animals – a 200-year-old French monkey footballer and fleas dressed as Mexicans. And then be on deck to uncover the true story of the ‘big whale on a lorry’ – and bring a long-forgotten marine mammal back to life.”

Sounds good! More info on his website and listen out for him on the radio in the next few weeks.

rear view from our balconyJust got back from our week holiday in sunny Spain! We stayed in the southern coastal region (Costa Tropical) in a working village where the locals couldnt speak a word of english but were incredibly friendly. We rented this great little self-catering cottage – Casa Jandee – in Velez de Benaudalla which Id highly recommend to couples on their own or with kids. Very comfy main bed, a second twin bedroom with a balcony, German satellite TV (odd but entertaining), fans in every room, a rooftop terrace to tan or have sundowners, overlooking spectacular 360 degree views of the village and mountains. There was even food and champagne for us in the fridge which was really unexpected. stray cats in spainThe local stray cats spotted us softies a mile off and arrived at our windows begging for everything they could see. We couldnt help feeding these tiny scrawny little things, and soon we had 7 or 8 regular visitors througout the day every day. At first we thought they were kittens until we noticed all the cats were that size. Moeder!

sea and meWe drove around lots but especially enjoyed Nerja’s big sandy beaches. Warm clear water and lots of pretty little things tanning (mostly topless). All the gorgeous young singles cruise around on motorbikes, mopeds and dirt bikes so there are no congestion or parking problems. Alcohol and cigarettes are rediculously cheap. People cook and fry chips with olive oil, not sunflower or rape-seed oil!! Such luxury. The mangos and fruit are fresh and taste divine. PieterIt was weird driving on the right, traffic circles where all the rules you know have been inverted, and tiny traffic lights that you suddenly notice when youve driven through them. The country is so laid back and relaxed about everything and I didnt spot a single parking fine, even though people parked anywhere they wanted.

a private beachIf you want to see real Spain I suggest staying in a working village away from the tourist traps. But you will definitely need a phrase book. We used this one which looked the best comparatively and included a whole food section – essential for food lovers. We learnt enough Spanish in a week with the help of this booklet to keep us going for a long time.

We’ll be posting photos soon.

Cait suggests BookCrossing – FREE YOUR BOOKS!
“BookCrossing lets you share your books with the world, and track their individual journeys forever more. Our members have registered 581,674 books so far, and a good number of these are ‘in the wild’ at any one time.”

What a novel idea!

By the way, if anyone is wondering, I’m just lurking around here after hours while Olivia and Mondays are on holiday.

Clinton, in rare move, denounces Bush record
clinton“We went from surplus to deficit, from job gain to job loss, from a reduction in poverty to an increase in poverty, from a reduction in people without health insurance to an increase of people without health insurance.”

“Instead of uniting the world, we alienated it,” he said. “And instead of uniting America, we divided it by trying to push it too far to the right.”

You can help ban canned lion hunting in South Africa.
lion cubsExcerpt from Kalahari Raptor Centre:
South Africa is a hunter’s paradise. But for the animals, South Africa is Hell on Earth.

  • The hunting of large predators by bow and arrow. Arrows kill by causing bleeding, and so most animals shot with arrows will take a long time to die. Some websites reveal that tame lions are routinely hunted with dogs – and then killed by bow and arrow while cornered by the dog pack.
  • safari

  • The power to certify that the target animal has been “rehabilitated to wild status” is given not to skilled rehabilitators, as one would expect, but to notoriously incompetent and hunting-orientated provincial nature conservation officials who have no knowledge of, or training in, the science of wildlife rehabilitation. Presumably any animal that does not jump up onto the official’s lap and lick his face will automatically be certified ‘wild’.
  • a lion in captivity

  • The extension of captive breeding and hunting not only to lions but also to other large predators, including endangered species such as wild dogs.
  • hunters on safari

  • Wildlife sanctuaries will continue to be prohibited. This means that cruelty to animals is permitted, but kindness is not. This is not conservation. It is grotesque. There are no regulations whatsoever on the minimum size of cages or any other aspect of the welfare of captive animals. For example, everyone knows of the terrible practice of captive breeders in taking the cubs away from the mother to bring her back into oestrus quicker so that she breeds faster. This is both cruel and unnatural and one witnesses lionesses, mouths bleeding from biting at the sharp wire fencing, trying to get to their crying cubs in a pitiful and pathetic attempt to obey their natural protective instincts.

The very definition of what Chapelers call A Shiny Story!

There’s a funny little synchronicity-thing going on betwixt Chapelers where I would be thinking of a certain topic or watching/reading something interesting and out of the blue a Chapeler will post something related, either on their own site or right at Chapel.
In this case I happened to be watching Antique Roadshow on PBS and wishing we had something antique that’s valued far above what we bought it for, then this story comes to light.

Cait, I’m very glad this happened to your friend, but it was supposed to happen to me!!!
