99% of my clients come in through word of mouth and through my blog. A large and interesting blog is a great way to compete with the larger agencies as it gives Google a lot more to chew through on your site, making you a hefty player. Be sure to keep your portfolio fresh and available on your website. I recently moved mine to the home page to maximise the use of the most prominent page on the site.
