Belize? P-lease!

THIS image exactly captures why I want to go back to Belize. And not only go back but live there. Imagine? Actually living there!? Waking up every single day to yet another gloriously hot sunshiny sky thinking, “What’s uuuup! Wow I’m in BELIZE!!! What am I doing here? Oh right, I LIVE HERE! EEEEEE!!!” So crazy. I’ve imagined it for years so eventually its going to happen. I’ll find this very island and pitch a tent on it and sleep at least one night. Uhhhhhhh…………………

And then kayak back to my ordinary every day life on a bigger island somewhere in belize. Now that doesn’t sound too shabby.

The Land of Over Seas

Even when I was in third grade I thought there was here (at the time ‘here’ was South Africa — the place where everyone in the world lives), and there was this country across the sea called “overseas”. The place my dad went to work, and where all the rich kids in school went on vacation to ski.

I couldn’t wait to be old enough to go overseas! The magical country of non-stop vacation.

The trouble with greencards

Oh I forgot to mention in previous posts that a couple of weeks ago I lost my greencard!! Ive been through all my possessions (2 whole bags of stuff), searched the house, the couch, behind the radiators. Morgan, was a total hero and dug through two weeks of maggoty, steaming old garbage with me, while she was stoned and therefore extra tweaked out. We were both gagging. I love her FOREVER for that (and really that’s just the beginning of what a true friend she is). I haven’t been able to locate it anywhere so I guess it fell out on a bus or the street and at this point its just never going to be found. (more…)

Blessed

Thanks to the wonderful healing powers of my dear friend Dragon and his Seawolf Medicine, I have bounced back, in an explosive way that I only remember in my teens. (more…)

My Tiny Sleeping Partner

But don’t be fooled by the cuteness. In the wilds of Colorado she killed a huge hare twice her size, dragged its severed headless body into the cabin and left it as a surprise in Joseph’s closet. That’s my baby girl!!

In the old neck of the woods

Pittsburgh, my original US ‘hometown’. Today I’m working from Crazy Mocha on Ellsworth Avenue, like old times. Sitting at my favourite table right by the window, people watching, like old times. Except this time I wont be going grocery shopping and then back home afterwards to think up what to make for dinner for the family and read bedtime stories afterwards. The house where we lived is just down a narrow side street I can see from this window. This time I’m walking back in the sunshine to Morgan’s seemingly non-stop-fun-house where I now live, and plan to live with her for a few more weeks of golden Pittsburgh summer. Saving up a bit for this ‘home’ wherever it is. Until the next place I live. Everything’s exactly the same around here as I remember yet completely different, and amazingly, in a really happy way. I don’t have limited time alone to do whatever I want whenever I want. I have all the time in the world. I’m as free as a bird, and having a lot more fun in Pittsburgh than I ever remember. Being alone is not the same as lonely. It is incredibly liberating. It amazes me how afraid I was for all my life to be alone. (more…)

Crazy Story

So. Here I am, still a bit shaky, sitting at a desk in a cheap motel in Pittsburgh that smells like wet dog soaked in ashtray. But after the last 4 days it’s a tiny victory. (more…)

Inner Guidance System Calling

Returning to Ometepe Island was not the homecoming I thought it would be. It felt very homely the last time I was here and I imagined it would feel even more so returning, but instead, I’ve been feeling increasingly alien. And though I feel I can make myself belong by putting down roots and being stubborn about it, at the same time I feel I really don’t belong here in the most natural sense. I’m just not feeling it inside. (more…)

And so our life of travel officially begins…

Wow, what an unexpected day, travelling to El Salvador, through Nicaragua and Honduras. Not that it wasn’t planned, but the things that happened I’d have never anticipated. For example, the El Salvadorian brothel. I may have been on mushrooms the whole time it all seemed so strange. (more…)

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
