King Pigeon of Penn Ave.

Well this post is really about something else entirely but an extraordinarily handsome pigeon stole all my attention on the way home from my bus adventure today and simply MUST be mentioned. Wow – for years now Tuxedo Pigeon of Brighton was the most magnificent pigeon Id ever seen, but today I met the father of all magnificent pigeons – King Pigeon of Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh. He walked around with a velvety robe, but the most amazing part was his neck. It was puffy and the widest I’d ever seen from which I imagine he emits a deep burbling mating call that only a King of Pigeons could make and it was smothered lavishly in the most dazzling peacock colours in a waterfall of perfect rainbow feathers. Wow! I stopped walking and just stood there admiring him, then noticed his elegant Lady Pigeon. A fine choice she was, but as I walked past he stood his ground, checked out my boots, while she flurried off hastily. King Pigeon was not about to make way for me. No. I hope to see his fine feathers again some day soon. (more…)

Amateur Astrophotographer Creates Largest True-Color Night Sky Panorama

WOW! What an adventure! What an achievement!!!

Gizmodo.com: One day, Nick Risinger, a 28-year-old marketing director from Seattle, felt like he needed a change. So he quit his job, packed up six professional astronomical cameras, and hiked 60,000 miles through western United States and South Africa, taking 37,000 color pictures of the night sky.

The result? This 5000-megapixel, interactive, zoomable map showing our full Milky Way galaxy, stars, planets, and the nebulae surrounding it. It’s the largest-ever, true-color, 360 degree panorama of the heavens—all created by this first-time astrophotographer.

Speedway 105 Café

My dad Paul and his twin brother Dave van der Spuy are interviewed @ Speedway Cafe. It’s amazing to see the place jamming — originally a dream of theirs for years and years, and with all the crazy setbacks I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen. But one thing I know about my dad is that if he’s passionate about something, nothing will stop him. If you live in Cape Town and are a huge fast and classic car and bike enthusiast, you may have already visited. My dad’s the one on the left throughout most of the video. Unbelievably I’ve still never seen it — haven’t been back to Cape Town in over 10 years. I’m dying to go!! Please go for me if you can.

Window Farming

NPR: “Window farming,” as it is called, is catching on in New York City and beyond. Window farmers use recycled 1.5 liter water bottles, clay pellets, plastic tubing and inexpensive fish tank air pumps to create their indoor gardens. There are now 4,000 registered users at windowfarms.org. Farmers are tending to their greens everywhere from the U.S. to Italy, Israel and Hong Kong….

The window farms web site provides instructions on how to put together a system that grows three plants. The materials will cost about $30 — and not all of them are traditional gardening supplies: water bottles, an aquarium air pump, air valve needles (like the kind you use to pump up a basketball), and a hanging system designed for displaying art.

WANTED!

With a FURIOUS PASSION. FURIOUS!!!! I have searched for this deck for 10 years. I have YEARNED for this deck. I have dreamed of it, DREAMED many dreams, woken up wondering when and how I will get this deck. I could only find it as a collectible item for hundreds of dollars before. Please please PLEASE, by the power of the Moon, the Stars and Greyskull, let this book come with the tarot deck as part of the package. I hope it comes wrapped in my dream caravan wagon too, with the purple drapes, red and gold filigree wallpaper, and green shutters, I will supply the laundry hanging on the attached line, and I will accept the cards in a box with this book, without the caravan. Very acceptable. Thank you.

Short blasts of exercise as good as hours of training

Had to double check the date on the computer wasn’t April 1st before reading further than this… it smacks of too good to be true though its definitely worth trying out!

“The body can get as much benefit from a short but intensive bursts of exercise lasting ten minutes than it can from ten hours of moderate training. The technique not only takes less time but also involves much less physical effort.” more…

Thanks Shawn!

Esque

If you’ve happened upon an unusual work of glass in a design store, magazine or Donna Karan’s NY flagship over the last decade or so, it’s probably a piece by the Portland-based studio Esque.

In this video we visit the workshop and meet the duo behind Esque, Andi Kovel and Justin Parker, who formed the creative partnership in 1996 and have been subtly reinventing the artform since. Here, Andi explains her choice of medium and the two walk us through the process of creating one of their renowned water drop jugs.

Help Save Japan’s Dolphins!

More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
