Facebook status messages – gain full control over who reads them with custom lists

Did you know that with Facebook’s new privacy features its possible to have full control over who views your status messages and who doesn’t, down to the finest finessing? Considering the increase of children friends on Facebook I think its really wise to have at least a “Children” exclusion list to select when making risque updates.

I will show you how to create lists to exclude children or work colleagues or the people you don’t know so well or people who have been pretty judgmental in the past. It’s really easy. This step by step tutorial you’ll only need to do once, but once you have done it, you’ll be able to find your way back to fine tune it with new people as time goes by. Or you can just bookmark this tutorial and come back later.

You might already have noticed that every time you create a new status update, you can click on the padlock underneath the area to select whether “everyone” sees it, “friends of friends”, “friends”, or just you. Each time I create one I carefully consider these options and always select something. That’s the basic option. But if you need to be careful who views your updates you can follow these instructions:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user() on WordPress 3.0.x

I’ve had this error for a few days and have been unable to access my dashboard:

Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user() in /html/wp-includes/capabilities.php line 1059.

In case you run into this problem since upgrading to WP 3 try adding this code after < ?php or on line 2 of capabilities.php:

require_once(‘pluggable.php’);

It worked for me and has worked for errors appearing on other lines.

*** UPDATE: this will stop working after you do a WordPress update, so you might want to bookmark this page so you can keep reapplying the patch until they get it sorted.

iRip for iPhone and iPod

What a life-saving app this is! My laptop was stolen about a month back and I lost my whole iTunes library. Who seriously can be bothered to keep burning those backups to DVD?

So for the past month Ive been unable to sync my phone with iTunes because my new iTunes library was empty and I’d made no backup of the original. I loved the audiobooks, ringtones and tracks on my phone so much I considered never syncing again. But today I found iRip which has imported all my files from my iPhone back into iTunes. And I mean ALL! I would hug it if I could I am so happy!!!

iRip is now FREE! So download away.

Other inferior apps are charging around $20 to do a crappier job at it. The Little App Factory – you guys rock!

*** UPDATE ***
Oh, so it does ask me to register half way through, to get all my tracks. Sneaky sneaky! However, I am still glad to pay the $20. The app worked perfectly!

Making It So

After over 5 years Yummy Wakame finally has a sleek new look! This has been a work-in-slow-progress for over a year now, as always with personal projects it’s been the last priority after paid work. At one point I thought it would never happen and didn’t touch it for about 4 months, figuring I’d work on it once work slowed down completely, but that never happened, and since October last year I suddenly found myself revelling in a whole lot more free time than I was used to. So YAY for Yummy Wakame! I guess now I’ll be passing around the business cards instead of cringingly giving out the URL to new clients. This design is a much better fit, inspired by something very meaningful to me. The portfolio isnt groaning under the weight of crusty 7 year old projects anymore. The new site and portfolio is so much easier to keep fresh thanks to WordPress, without needing to do a further stitch of code. I can make you a WordPress powered site too!

Oh and I’m working on the issue with the homepage taking a year to load. The hidden portfolio pieces are massive and unfortunately are loading before they are needed, so I still have to figure out how to load them on demand. Hopefully you all have broadband.

If anyone knows what that Kanji character is in the favicon you get +10hp!

Short blasts of exercise as good as hours of training

Had to double check the date on the computer wasn’t April 1st before reading further than this… it smacks of too good to be true though its definitely worth trying out!

“The body can get as much benefit from a short but intensive bursts of exercise lasting ten minutes than it can from ten hours of moderate training. The technique not only takes less time but also involves much less physical effort.” more…

Thanks Shawn!

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
