Innermost House

Uhhh!! This is SO INSPIRING!

“Innermost house is about 12 feet sqare, there is no electricity, no hot water, and yet my husband and I lead a life of luxury here… You enter timeless time here, and without the distractions of modern life its easy to forget about everything except the moment.”

Seven years ago Diana and Michael Lorence moved to a 12-foot-square home without electricity in the coastal mountains of Northern California.
They’re not back-to-the-land types- they’re not growing their own food, nor raising animals-, but, like Thoreau, they were looking for a place where they could get away from the noise of society and focus on their inner lives.
For nearly 30 years they have lived in tiny houses, often in guest homes, though their current abode is the smallest and most fitting their needs. It was designed by Michael based on their experiences living in nearly 20 tiny homes across the country before finally settling here.

“Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
–Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Halloween Theme for Sock Dreams

I’ve been slacking on the updates lately. Just been sort of unwordy lately. I totally forgot to show you the new Halloween Theme I launched for Sock Dreams the other day. Was loads of fun to work on and kept me busy for ages! I’ve also created a gorgeous Halloween Theme e-gift card (launching tomorrow), but you’ll have to send one to someone special (like yourself) if you want to see it ;)

Next I’m working on a Winter Solstice theme. Mmmmmm!

Some New Tiny House Designs

I find these tiny house designs so inspiring. And now that I know my friend Joe O’Toole is an architect AND also has an obsession with tiny house design, maybe some day if I get my act together I’ll be able to build one with him! Wouldn’t that be smashing :D

Oh boy

Spring is driving me crazy. My nesting instincts are kicking my butt. I’m about to leave on a trip, may end up travelling by land all the way from Nicaragua to Brazil over the next few months and instead of packing light I’ve bought a double hammock with mosquito net and bedding, massage oil, herbal medicines and oils, all these cosy things that smell nice and feel good. This is not a good time for me to be packing for a major trip like this. Clearly. I just crave having and sharing home comforts right now. It will be interesting to see if I can pull it off, do both travel and have home comforts, without much effort.

And I keep seeing things like this. Which isn’t helping. I am homesick. I want to rest. I. want. to. nest. But I don’t want to settle just anywhere… somehow I will know when I find it.

$1000 Egg House on Wheels

Oh I am madly in love with this little pod house!!!!

The newly-graduated architect rarely has the luxury of living in an owned home, and may even find their starting salary insufficient to afford a decent apartment within walking (or riding) distance of the office. For a three-figure sum, this designer has solved both problems at once via a unique DIY dwelling project… more

*** UPDATE ***
Oh no! It looks like the government didn’t appreciate the media attention and forced him out of his house :(
Egg house designer will be forced to live in rented house

Swipe credit cards with your smartphone

Squareup is brilliant! So handy — I would say even crucial — for flea-market vendors, Craigslist sellers, at garage sales and for other small business needs.

The tiny card reader that plugs into your smart phone via the earphone jack is free. All you pay are transaction fees (which you do anyway when you accept credit cards). There’s no contract – just pay as you go.

YAY! The Sock Dreams Valentines theme is live!

Working for Sock Dreams all these years has been so much fun. If it wasn’t for them, I might have never started freelancing, and everything this freelance life has afforded me would have never happened. All the places I’ve been, the people I’ve loved, the people I now know. These years have been amazing. I am so grateful. I LOVE you guys!!!

Help Save Japan’s Dolphins!

More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
