The Land of the Waves of Goodbyes

There once was a King who lived in a beautiful gigantic sand castle, designed and created by huge sandy hands. There he lived with his lifelong awaited Queen, who had tangly seaweed for hair and tiny seashells for breasts… they had crabs that were hired as court jesters, noble steeds and served as the occasional banquet. Each season a new castle would be built, bigger and better than the ones before, more elaborate and ornate, with stables and dungeons. News of these castles travelled far and wide and parties surrounded them. There was word that the most magnificent and tallest castle yet had been built, perhaps too close to the ocean, but the King and Queen would hear none of it. The moonlight bouncing off the water made the sandy walls glint in all the colours of the night, just the way they liked it.

One day while the King was out on a quest on his favourite steed, a giant wave that had built up from just a tiny ripple across the other end of the ocean months previously came to its crashing destiny, and washed everything away.

… the King hearing news of this tragedy never returned to the land of their famous castles. He is nowhere to be found and wants to be found nowhere. No longer a King he lives each day with promised uncertainty, looking for his Queen, but knowing she was washed away.

A giant girlperson with sandy hands found the two little shells lying in the soggy foundations, painted them and kept them in her jewellery box. Sometimes, when she holds them to her ears, she can still hear the Queen, playing in her ocean.

Self-limiting beliefs have no basis in reality, they exist only in the imagination.

Yesterday at my request, my sister Nykki drove me out to a long stretch of road, parked on the side and we switched seats. I’ll never forget how we grinned at each other and giggled. For most of my life I had lived with a crushing fear of driving that made me feel powerless and in extreme danger behind the wheel. Even as a passenger I was unbelievably anxious, pushing on the invisible brakes and biting my nails. But yesterday as I sat behind the wheel and adjusted my seat, instead of feeling paralysed behind the wheel I felt tremendous excitement as all my dreams for a travelling future came flooding in, and as I drove off, that excitement was turned into courage and finally control as I turned on winding corners and went up narrow farm roads on steep blind hills. She is the perfect teacher. (more…)

Staying Awake With Matchsticks In My Eyes

Apparently while I was too busy to watch the news, the North American Union was formed. Bush signed the agreement without the approval of Congress or our consent. Don’t feel bad if you havent heard about it, apparently hardly anyone knows about it yet.

WIRED: What Became of the LOGO Programming Language?
This article gave me a happy shiver of reminiscence. The game is apparently still being used in schools to teach kids programming skills. But we don’t have to go back to school – we can
play with the turtle in our browsers right now!

Ultimate Transformer Watch

Oh my gosh Oh my gosh! The excruciating excitement I felt when I saw this picture and thought for a second I could buy one again!!!

Original Transformer Watch

The exact same watch my dad got me as a kid – I’ve tried to describe it to friends countless times and somehow felt like I never did it justice because no-one seemed that impressed. Well be impressed! I had a red one, Kenna the blue.

… my heart’s still pounding…

To celebrate the epic new Transformers Movie that is being released later this week and with a little help from mutual studio Transformers fans take a look at this mega 80’s transforming watch. The robot detaches and if almost by magic transforms into a free standing robot. You can buy newer versions of this watch now but not a patch on the retro version.

Partly Cloudy

In my earliest years I grew up in a house where the weather was the most important thing the TV had to say, while the news only got to burble in the background as we dressed the cats up in bibs and bonnets and stuffed them into the doll bed. It was the only time my dad would ever tell us to “SHHHHH!!!!” and for 5 minutes the whole family’s attention would be on one single thing – the weatherman’s pointy stick. I guess if you spend every day, all day strangled by a suit and tie, knowing exactly which layers and fabrics to wear can make a huge difference in comfort.

weather iconOver the years weather reports have evolved from hokey little drawings with stuck on clouds to 3D generated plains that swoop and globes that spin and mesmerise, but nothing beats an accurate 5-day weather report.

I discovered AccuWeather.com through a nifty plugin for Firefox: Forecastfox shows you the temperature for now, today and tomorrow in your toolbar or statusbar. If you travel a lot you can switch between custom-made profiles with a right-click. And what I love the most about AccuWeather’s reports is the RealFeel® temperature, which takes into account chilly winds, humidity and levels of sunshine. I use it every day and so far its been 100% accurate. Maybe you’ll like it too.

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
