Happy New Year!

Existence

You are not accidental. Existence needs you. Without you something will be missing in existence and nobody can replace it. That's what gives you dignity, that the whole existence will miss you. The stars and sun and moon, the trees and birds and earth - everything in the universe will feel a small place is vacant which cannot be filled by anybody except you.

every day and every night

This Bob Marley song follows me around and haunts me on this island. No matter where I move, I keep hearing it, keeping the dream alive.

little hands

covered in pen and paints
always buzzing round my head
curling tuggy fingers around my hair
pointing new questions at everything
baby monkey mommy monkey piggy back gripping
pressing into steps too giant to climb without
shrugging parents loose crossing streets

fashioning spears out of rock
moulding animals and people out of squidgy things
gripping onto handlebars so tight they calloused
chocolate icecream muddy fingernails straight after cleaning
climbing into my neck and curling to sweet smells of hair and cheeks

those perfect little hands I once held and kissed

oh how I MISS those little hands

I'm going to start sharing all the weirdest and strangest abandoned places I know of.

In 1962, a little fire in Centralia (Pennsylvania) migrated into an exposed vein of anthracite coal under the town. Although the flames on the surface were extinguished, the coal continued to burn underground for many years until a fire in 1984 got completely out of control and the city had to be evacuated. Total Lunar Eclipse, 21 December 2010

I couldn't believe how lucky I was last night, to find myself alone this 2am, because for the first time in 372 years, a total lunar eclipse occurred on the date of the northern winter solstice.

The clouds had parted for the occasion and the sky was at its blackest black, framed by the edges of lush jungle trees on this sleeping island. It was a spectacular show with blinking and shooting stars, with only one wish made. On every one of them. I couldn't believe the colours. Or how long she hung in the sky, swollen like this. I waited an hour before falling sleepy so I never got to watch her final exit. I wish I had.

I am so grateful to be here. So grateful.
