Friday the 13th
Almost Packed and Ready To Go!
Today I’ve been scrambling around town looking for the only Solio in Pittsburgh to keep my phone charged. As it turns out Nathan’s cute little Hymini doesn’t power iPhones and for a few hours today I was panicking that I’d not even have emergency phone contact after a few days. The crisis is over – thanks Best Buy for stocking this great product! I have a few more things to pack, wrap up some work, stuff my phone with tunes and then its off to bed to try too sleep.
Here’s my new shell for the next week -
The Next Walking Adventure Begins Friday!
That being the rugged 70-mile Laurel Highlands Backpacking Adventure! I’ve been looking forward to it for months. Anna and I are taking up the challenge to complete Pennsylvania’s famously gorgeous, scenic trail over 7 days. It starts in Ohiopyle, PA and ends near Johnstown, PA, though we will be doing it backwards.
Check out the route map!

Funky Forest
AMAZING!
“‘Funky Forest’ is an interactive ecosystem where children create trees with their body and then divert the water flowing from the waterfall to the trees to keep them alive. The health of the trees contributes to the overall health of the forest and the types of creatures that inhabit it.”

Bacteria-Run Computer Solves Math Puzzle
A new living computer, bred from E. coli bacteria instead of stamped from silica, has for the first time successfully solved a classic mathematical puzzle known as the Burnt Pancake Problem.
While this bacteria-based computer is more proof of concept than practical, a living computer might one day solve complex mathematical problems faster than silicon supercomputers.
“The computing potential of DNA far exceeds that of any other material,” said Karmella Haynes, a researcher at Davidson College and lead study author. “If we figure out how to increase that capacity in a practical manner we will have much more computing power.” …more
Running the Numbers
“Statistics can feel abstract and anaesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 32,000 breast augmentation surgeries in the U.S. every month.
This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. Employing themes such as the near versus the far, and the one versus the many, I hope to raise some questions about the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming.”

Help Save Japan’s Dolphins!
More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat. Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue »
