Please help!

The Scorpions / Die SkerpioeneThe Directorate of Special Operations (aka the Scorpions) is a multidisciplinary agency that investigates and prosecutes the most serious organized crime and corruption in South Africa. These include drug trafficking, human smuggling and human trafficking, corruption in the government, serious and complex financial crime, racketeering and money laundering. This newly democratic country, a beacon of hope to so many undemocratic countries and countries in conflict, cannot afford to lose the only impartial policing we have to ensure South Africa is being governed well. The tremendous dent in serious organised crime in South Africa today wouldn’t be a reality without the Scorpions. (wikipedia)

Being completely independent from the government the Scorpions can prosecute high ranking officials in the ANC (the ruling party) for serious crimes of national impact, and have, and are currently. It is believed by many that this is the reason the government is hurrying the legislation through Parliament that by June 2008 the Scorpions will be disbanded and merged with the South African Police Service, effectively removing their power from then onwards.

The staff of 2000 Scorpions consist of the best police, financial, forensic and intelligence experts of South Africa, with an average conviction rate of 93,1% on all prosecutions. They are depending on us to do something about it.

Please sign the petition. Let’s keep it constructive! And spread the news.

The Scorpions should be protected under the constitution. This would never have happened under Mandela’s watch.

The story of a hero who just wanted to dance

It all began here…

(WATCH AND REMEMBER! THE TECHNOVIKING DOESN’T DANCE TO THE MUSIC! THE MUSIC DANCES TO THE TECHNOVIKING!)

Watch it on YouTube.

Techno Viking is legendary across the world and followers have devoted their lives to spawning hundreds of fan response videos, like this one, attempting to track him down, and in comment to teaser post “TECHNO-VIKING’S ALIVE!“:

I’m actually sobbing at my desk because I actually thought you guys found him. NOT FUNNY AT ALL. I need to know this guy’s story so bad it’s tearing my life apart. I just lost my g/f and my job and I’m not sleeping and I’m drinking like my name’s Chinaski and it’s not even him… further, further into the depths I go.

Blue-eyed humans come from a single, common mutant

Pretty much.

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today…

This part makes me happy to be a unique creature of this earth:

…The mutation of brown eyes to blue represents neither a positive nor a negative mutation. It is one of several mutations such as hair colour, baldness, freckles and beauty spots, which neither increases nor reduces a human’s chance of survival. As Professor Eiberg says, “it simply shows that nature is constantly shuffling the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.”

Rolling Homes

Handmade Houses on Wheels

I’ve heard lots of wonderful things about this book which was first published in ’79 but is sadly out of print these days and has become an expensive collectors item. Tomorrow I will be posting a fantastic project that was inspired by the book, but in the mean time, check out this review which posts all sorts of gorgeous interior and exterior shots of different rolling homes like this one:

Help Save Japan’s Dolphins!

More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat. Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue »
