The usual

Me: “… I’m just saying, he’s better at CSS than both of us.”
Nathan: “Nah. I doubt that. I’m better at CSS than you are anyway.”
O: “Whatever. You know I’m the best.”

N: “Im just saying… I’m better at being a boy than you.”
O: “Whatever. I’m way better at being a boy than you are. You’re just better at having a weiner.”
N: (trademark scrunched-up-smile) “That’s true. Well that part is true.”

The Alt Attribute in Firefox

Firefox browserFirefox is great, but where have all the little popups that show up when you hover over an image gone? They’re so nifty and this is the one thing that Internet Explorer does better than Firefox, right?

For those of us who dig on having nifty sayings or hidden jokes behind our images, you’re in luck. The “alt tag” as it’s called (it’s actually technically called the “alt attribute” as a tag is the main element, such as p or in this case, img) is not defined as being the attribute to produce this little popup text. The actual attribute is title. So where Internet Explorer interprets either as resulting in popup text, Firefox follows the rules and only does so with the latter. Not saying that it’s necessarily evil of IE to do so, just stating some facts.

So, if you’d like your images to popup text, try this:

<img src="filename.jpg" alt="accurately describe the image here" title="put in your funny saying or witty repartee in this spot" />

My secret to happiness in the moment

Normally I don’t post personal stuff but then I thought it might help just one other person. In the last few days I stumbled upon a realisation so obvious I’m amazed I could never quite grasp it before. Here in America where I now live, we are encouraged to believe “You can have it all. You owe it to yourself. ” Think about what those little phrases mean – how deeply ingrained they are in so many cultures. Think about how measuring yourself up against this ‘requirement to happiness’ affects your daily satisfaction levels… (more…)

The Big Five-Oh

A lot of people are disturbed by this image, so I had better explain it. According to the ancient classical meditative traditions of India, a person’s life is divided into twenty-five year sections: during the first twenty-five years, one is a student. For the second twenty-five years, one becomes a householder, and tends to worldly affairs. At age fifty, one should become a forest dweller; one should go live in a forest and think only of God. I have always liked this system, and have tried to live according to it. But when I turned fifty, it was obvious that it would be very inconvenient, both for myself and for many other people, if I went to live in a forest. First, in the state where I live it’s illegal to live in the forests, and if I tried to do so I would probably end up being a jail dweller instead. So I decided that the forest in which I would live, thinking of God, would be in my mind, and that’s what this painting is about.

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
