Wowee! What happened to Yummy?

yummy wakameA whole new site has been designed just for you! I’m now using the wonderfully elegant WordPress because it supports my strict XHTML doctype requirements and because it gives me more flexibility than Blogger and is completely reliable. So all the old Blogger posts have been imported into the new site, but sadly all your wonderful old comments have been lost.

I’ve manually added in all the comments from the last week to make it a bit easier. If you would like to trawl through the old site begin here. It won’t be up forever though.

So what’s changed?
Well you might notice the domain is now www.yummy-wakame.com. This is because I bought this domain and a fantastic new PHP hosting server option to develop the new site on while the old site remained undisturbed. All old page links will eventually point to this new domain.

You’ll notice the site is now a LOT bigger. I desperately needed a proper portfolio site since going freelance, so that’s tucked away in there too.

The old site wasn’t standards compliant at all. It had scruffy code which I wasn’t too happy with, since I was only just learning CSS when I built it. The new Yummy Wakame validates as XTML strict, so it should render properly on all browsers that support web standards. It is AAA accessible, which means that people with disabilities and with special browsers can access the information without any problems. It is also accessible from handheld devices that can get online. And of course its all done with pure CSS. No tables or old-style HTML. Nice and clean! A lot of web designers sigh and complain that its impossible to design anything pretty under the restrictions of CSS and AAA accessible requirements, but hopefully this is an example of what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

What’s left to do?
A special stylesheet for hand-held devices is coming soon.

And the archive, well it doesnt work so well at the moment since all the old blogger posts had no titles… so over time I will have to go in and manually edit every single post and give them titles. This will take me a long time to complete since there are a few thousand posts to fix.

I also need to send invites out to all my editors!

Oh and you might come across some pages I forgot to complete. Let me know if you do. Well, enjoy! I had fun making it.

WoW! My breakfast time surfing just got even more fun!
Excellent design Olivia, I can’t wait to explore . . .

Quiddity says:

oooh. I got so excited I forgot to leave my name!

Quiddity says:

I am SO impressed. I love all the attention to detail which creates a sense of harmony, rather than being fussy and distracting as so many sites are.

It’s excellent that the accessibility features are so, well, accessible! Often they’re tucked away and therefore completely useless.

Oh, I also love all the icons that link to your portfolio it’s much more fun than a list.

Hehehehe this is so much fun :@)

fly* says:

olivia says:

Yay! Its such a relief the comments and everything works. Thanks for all the lovely things you’ve said :@}

I’m so happy today so I think I’ll do a little dance right now.

Lola says:

Olivia! THIS IS AWESOME!

hemaworstje says:

always hate it when they change websites, it gets more commercial , less clear, but ahh who cares.

olivia says:

I do.

David D. says:

I find your new design to be integrated, both professionally and emotionally, into the very core of the essence of the original eternal selflessness.

Too often we forget that when we look to the stars, well, the stars might be looking back.

Unless they’re blind, in which case, you shouldn’t look at them because it’s rude to stare.

eazy says:

Very Impressed! If you have any time left…

dawn says:

It’s gorgeous! You do fabulous work.

Cait says:

It really is beautiful, but I loved the lips lady too on the prior incarnation of Yummy. I haven’t checked out all the website yet. Is there a place for her on the new & improved Yummy?

Cait says:

Ah, I looked the whole site over and it’s really…well…yummy. I love the colors. And I see you are still using the “lips” as your link button. You really have done a fabulous job on this. I still love my weblog, just as it is. It suits me. I think Miko likes it as is too.

olivia says:

Hahahaha Cait as usual you have me in hysterics! As if I’d EVER DREAM of surprising you with a new blog design when you keep reminding me every time I redo some or other blog that you like yours the way it is. So don’t worry, until you notify me of any changes I won’t ever touch your baby.

And thanks everyone for your great comments. Even hemaworstje – he raises a valid point. In fact he hit on the exact thing I was worrying about for ages when I did the overhaul. But the content of the blog is what’s most important and that will never change. And the old site, well it was REALLy scruffy and it no longer reflected my personality.

Now that Im a freelancer, I dont have the luxury of pouring hours of work every day into a hobby, unless it also helps me put food on the table. It was way overdue.

sauceruney says:

Impressive and beautiful!

Excellent work, Olivia!

Scully says:

Well Mulder, I’d say the new website is more practical than paranormal. I think Olivia has done the perfect thing (as normal) and has made a very accessible, stimulating website page. I think that though the stars may not be impressed, the fan base will support her, in a way unlike you support the far-fetched belief that Aliens inhabit the earth.

David D. says:

Scully, is it really so hard for you to understand that the show is cancelled and while my belief in the paranormal, quasinormal, and quasimoto have been so ingrained into the culture that THEY would do anything necessary to stop me were they to know we were even commenting here, but that for every fairy you kill, an alien is born.

fly* says:

Olivia…..where did you get those geisha photos ???

Skinner says:

Mulder, I believe you. But the organization is cracking down hard, from the top down. It will be my head on this one and even if you personally witness the next alien landing you know that that won’t prove anything and that you’ll never get your little sister back

Niqkita says:

I went away for a few days and come home to find this…
and it is just beautiful and inspiring and inviting and oh-so-many-fantastic things!!! Good job!!!!!!!!! xoxox

Eon says:

LOL – I nearly had a heart attack….

Great site…..*oogles at new yummy things*

Cap'n Marrrrrk says:

roowlant says:

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
