Money as an Illusion

It dawned on me some time ago the ridiculousness of currency. Everyone agrees that little slips of paper have value simply because they have a certain image and number printed on them. I understand that for every American dollar there is supposed to be some amount of gold in old Fort Knox, and that other countries as well must have some system of backing their paper monies and coins, but I don’t buy it 100%. It’s not like I’m trading you a sheep for ten planks of wood or something, two tangibles being exchanged with values set on them only by the people involved in the transaction.

Way over here in America, some other people have decidedly got the same inkling, and they’ve started their own money. Now let’s all see if the Liberty Dollar works out.

I always insist I never forget a face. Eyes and mouths are so unique and personal I find it the best way to remember someone. For some reason, names aren’t that important to me, like meaningless labels, so I find it hard remembering them. Still faces are so personal. I’d much rather someone forgot my name but remembered my face. Wouldn’t you?

BBC Science: The Face Memory Test
This test assesses your ability to remember how long ago something happened – your ‘temporal’ memory. If you’re tired you won’t be as good at remembering when you saw or did something.

Results: I recognised 100% of the faces. However with 3 faces, I couldn’t remember where I recognised them from. What’s your score? No cheating…

Have you seen…

paperfrogPaperFrog‘s cute new froggy design? It’s brilliant. The whole blog is brilliant. PaperFrog is a Buddhist inspired journal, and the most recent post made on Valentine’s Day is typical of the great content that can be found there:

Mindful love

“One of the first writings I came across from Thich Nhat Hanh was a deceptively simple teaching on the essence of love. In a nutshell, Nhat Hahn reminds us that the most meaningful thing we can do for our loved ones is simply to be present. Not present in the sense of “quality time” or just being at hand ? present in a deep, aware fashion that opens each of us to real communication. In other words, presence as an extension of the practice of mindfulness.

It’s easier to imagine this concept than really practice it. I find it difficult enough to still my thoughts in meditation, much less while interacting with another person. It’s our nature to let our minds wander, imagining what it might be the best thing to say next, wondering how we are coming across to the other person, thinking about pretty much anything other than just listening.”

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
