Canada embarks on mass seal hunt
Canadian sealers have pushed out to sea for the largest cull in 50 years despite protests by environmentalists and animal rights groups.
Around 140,000 seals are expected to be slaughtered by the end of today.
The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed, arguing that the campaign is ecologically sound because “an estimated 5.2 million harp seals in the North Atlantic at present – and commercial fish stocks were vanishing.”
The IFAW says government guidelines on humane hunting methods are being ignored. “We filmed and witnessed seals being skinned alive right in front of us. We saw live seals being dragged while conscious across the ice with boat hooks; we saw stockpiles of dead and dying seals. It was really horrific.”

The Cockney Bible has now been published, receiving great reception from all around. Featuring passages with Jesus speaking in rhyming slang, this Book is even endorsed by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Author Mike Coles, who has lived and taught religious education in the East End of London for 15 years, began re-writing the stories after pupils were amused by his references to Jesus as a “geezer”, and his mates as “china plates”, and tells how Christ fed the 5,000 geezers by making a huge Jim Skinner. It has been written by a religious education teacher from east London.
It also include a translated version of the The Lord’s Prayer.
“Hello, Dad, up there in good ol’ heaven, Your name is well great and holy, and we respect you, Guv. We hope we can all ‘ave a butcher’s at heaven and be there as soon as possible; and we want to make you happy, Guv, and do what you want ‘ere on earth, just like what you do in heaven. Guv, please give us some Uncle Fred, and enough grub and stuff to keep us going today, and we hope you’ll forgive us when we cock things up, just like we’re supposed to forgive all them who annoy us and do dodgy stuff to us. There’s a lot of dodgy people around, Guv; please don’t let us get tempted to do bad things. Help keep us away from all that nasty, evil stuff, and keep that dodgy Satan away from us, ‘cos you’re much stronger than ‘im. You’re the Boss, God, and will be for ever, innit? Cheers, Amen.”

On Friday we went to visit one of the largest aquatic and reptile centres I have ever been to… and I fell in love.. TWICE!! There was an iguana (one of my all time favourite reptiles) that had been mistreated as a baby, with the result that his growth has been stunted, measuring in at a mere 4.5 ft at age 5. More iguana info: mpeg, mpeg, more stuff.
They also had the cutest yellow belly turtles (yellow-bellied sliders). They seemed very sleepy and unplayful… making them even more fun to watch… here’s one popping eggs!
Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil
The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
