BANKSYRenowned graffiti artist Banksy sneaks his work into the Tate (pic)
Banksy, best known for creating the sleeve of the latest Blur album, glued his painting to the wall of Tate Britain and it was only discovered when it crashed to the floor hours later.

He visited Tate Britain in prosthetic make-up to make him look elderly. (Banksy keeps his real identity secret for fear of prosecution after spray-painting numerous sites with his witty works.)

Banksy 1975. Crimewatch UK Has Ruined The Countryside For All Of Us. 2003. Oil On Canvas. The artist then took his framed painting out of a bag, a rural scene which had an image of police tape stencilled on to it, and stuck it on the wall unchallenged. A card next to it read: “Banksy 1975. Crimewatch UK Has Ruined The Countryside For All Of Us. 2003. Oil On Canvas.”

The caption said: “The artist has found an unsigned oil painting and then stencilled police incident tape over the top. He argues that ruining the work in this way reflects how our nation has been vandalised by an obsession with crime and paedophilia. Any visit to a secluded beauty spot now feels like it may result in being molested or finding discarded body parts. Presented by the artist personally in 2003.”

Many of Banksy’s artworks have been sprayed on the walls and pavements of the Shoreditch area of London. They have included a large work poking fun at police – right next to a police station.

Da VinciWhat is transhumanism?
Transhumanism is a way of thinking about the future that is based on the premise that the human species in its current form does not represent the end of our development but rather a comparatively early phase.

EXTROPHY INSTITUTE

DavidHuman beings achieved ‘civilization’ thousands of years ago. Yet we have not shaken off the ancient tyrannies that haunt the human condition. We suffer physical and emotional sicknesses ending in decrepitude and death. The primitive parts of our brain spur us to envy, to hate, to despair, and to kill. Our philosophies and our religions attempt to express our highest values, yet we use them to oppress and control. We use them to crush the world’s complexity into a simplicity that we can clutch like a security blanket for the human condition.

Human ingenuity has created astonishing institutions and technologies to remedy these problems. Yet our intellectual and emotional limitations often spawn new problems from our attempted solutions, while our primitive drives find ways to abuse them. The ever-accelerating pace of change breeds anxiety even as it glimmers with hope. Powerful technologies ever more rapidly shake up entire cultures and economies as well as each individual life. As we continue to experiment with technology using legacy brains and antiquated strategies, uncertainty and anxiety continue to plague us.

The Vision
Advances in technology (including “social technologies” of knowledge management, learning, and decision-making) are starting to enable us to change human nature itself in its physical, emotional, and intellectual aspects. The radical possibilities now emerging could cause huge problems or could enormously improve the human/transhuman condition. With better knowledge and decision making, humans could live far longer in better-than-”perfect” health; improve their self-knowledge and awareness of interpersonal dynamics; overcome cultural, psychological, and memetic biases in thinking; enhance intelligence in all its various forms; and learn to thrive on change and growth.”

The US government has a new website, http://www.ready.gov. It’s another attempt at scare-mongering in the style of the old “duck and cover” advice after WWII.

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
