Graham points out – New electronic paper displays video too

Philips says the prototypes it has developed of electronic ink displays have paper-like viewing characteristics with excellent contrast.“Hot on the heels of the invention of a wafer-thin foldable screen that can display static type and may one day replace newspapers as it can be overwritten each day, scientists at Philips Research in Eindhoven have found a way to display high-definition moving pictures as well. Using a process called electrowetting, the scientists claim to be able to manipulate colored oils in the pixels on the page with such speed and accuracy as to be able to generate clear and accurate video displays.”

“With an e-paper screen sewn into a jacket, wearers could read e-mail or even watch the news on their sleeves while hot-footing it from one meeting to another.”

bigwhaleonalorry.com has become a book!
The Barnsley Whale – the true story of the world’s first inland whale hunt” by Mainstream Publishing at £9.99. It includes Steve’s voyage to Brighton’s Fishing Museum and Sea Life Aquarium.

“Join me on an epic voyage of discovery that will drive you onto the shores of madness and brave seas of uncertainty where fact is far stranger than fiction. Meet football fans, fishermen, Vikings, billionaires, miners, saints and people who shout into mobile phones. Encounter weird and wonderful animals – a 200-year-old French monkey footballer and fleas dressed as Mexicans. And then be on deck to uncover the true story of the ‘big whale on a lorry’ – and bring a long-forgotten marine mammal back to life.”

Sounds good! More info on his website and listen out for him on the radio in the next few weeks.

rear view from our balconyJust got back from our week holiday in sunny Spain! We stayed in the southern coastal region (Costa Tropical) in a working village where the locals couldnt speak a word of english but were incredibly friendly. We rented this great little self-catering cottage – Casa Jandee – in Velez de Benaudalla which Id highly recommend to couples on their own or with kids. Very comfy main bed, a second twin bedroom with a balcony, German satellite TV (odd but entertaining), fans in every room, a rooftop terrace to tan or have sundowners, overlooking spectacular 360 degree views of the village and mountains. There was even food and champagne for us in the fridge which was really unexpected. stray cats in spainThe local stray cats spotted us softies a mile off and arrived at our windows begging for everything they could see. We couldnt help feeding these tiny scrawny little things, and soon we had 7 or 8 regular visitors througout the day every day. At first we thought they were kittens until we noticed all the cats were that size. Moeder!

sea and meWe drove around lots but especially enjoyed Nerja‘s big sandy beaches. Warm clear water and lots of pretty little things tanning (mostly topless). All the gorgeous young singles cruise around on motorbikes, mopeds and dirt bikes so there are no congestion or parking problems. Alcohol and cigarettes are rediculously cheap. People cook and fry chips with olive oil, not sunflower or rape-seed oil!! Such luxury. The mangos and fruit are fresh and taste divine. PieterIt was weird driving on the right, traffic circles where all the rules you know have been inverted, and tiny traffic lights that you suddenly notice when youve driven through them. The country is so laid back and relaxed about everything and I didnt spot a single parking fine, even though people parked anywhere they wanted.

a private beachIf you want to see real Spain I suggest staying in a working village away from the tourist traps. But you will definitely need a phrase book. We used this one which looked the best comparatively and included a whole food section – essential for food lovers. We learnt enough Spanish in a week with the help of this booklet to keep us going for a long time.

We’ll be posting photos soon.

Cait suggests BookCrossing – FREE YOUR BOOKS!
“BookCrossing lets you share your books with the world, and track their individual journeys forever more. Our members have registered 581,674 books so far, and a good number of these are ‘in the wild’ at any one time.”

What a novel idea!

By the way, if anyone is wondering, I’m just lurking around here after hours while Olivia and Mondays are on holiday.

Clinton, in rare move, denounces Bush record
clinton“We went from surplus to deficit, from job gain to job loss, from a reduction in poverty to an increase in poverty, from a reduction in people without health insurance to an increase of people without health insurance.”

“Instead of uniting the world, we alienated it,” he said. “And instead of uniting America, we divided it by trying to push it too far to the right.”

Help Save Japan’s Dolphins!

More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat. Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue »
