Fence Musicclick here to listen
the remains of the rabbit proof fence at starvation bay, western australia.“In 1995 Jon Rose built and played a barbed wire fence as part of the New Music Festival at Viitasaari, Finland. It was modeled on the border that separates Russia and Finland. Then came the idea to make an experimental radio work… an endless fence that circumnavigates the entire world, incorporating many of the conflict zones that seem unresolvable or remain as scars on the psychology of the people who must live on each side of these artificially created borders.”

Amina Lawal Case Update
Amina LawalOn 23/01/2002, the Upper Sharia Court of Appeal of Katsina announced that the hearing of Amina Lawal’s appeal against her sentence would take place today. The case had to be adjourned until June 3 after only two members of a four man panel of judges turned up, pushing the trial back until after next month’s national elections. Amina was sentenced to death by stoning, as soon as her baby girl has been weaned. Her crime: having a child out of wedlock in Nigeria. This will entail burying Amina up to her waist and stoning her until she is dead.

International human rights groups have worked hard to raise the profile of this case and fighting for her rights as they did last year for Safiya Hussaini, who was finally aquitted. As usual there were no charges made against the men who fathered these children.

Every day we go on about support for brave US and UK troops… lucky enough to be on the winning side from the beginning. Men and women who have chosen to bravely go and invade Iraq and blow it up with their massive weapons.

Surrender! What about Iraqi soldiers who have no choice, forced by conscription to fight to their deaths or be killed by the regime? What about their families who know their husbands, fathers and sons are either going to be murdered or become POWs. Children who will most likely never see their fathers again. Ordinary men and boys from the age of 15 to 45, many of whom are terrified and unwilling to fight, waiting to be slaughtered one by one by brave American and British soldiers, until Bush and Saddam have satisfied their blood lust. It saddens me so much to see the frightened Iraqi POWs lined up, ragged clothes with no shoes on and blistered feet. Nobody supports them. Nobody cares what will happen to them.

There is no bravery or glory in beating-up something half your size. It would seem Bush’s mother was more concerned with teaching her son to chew his pretzels properly, and even in that she failed.

Protect the Western Arctic Reserve From Big Oil

The Western Arctic Reserve, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The 23.5 million-acre reserve is home to imperiled polar bears, seabirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Its shores and lagoons harbor beluga whales, seals, walruses and other marine mammals. The BLM is accepting comments on a planning document that sets the stage for oil and gas leasing in the western Arctic for decades to come. Help save this national treasure by telling the BLM to protect the Western Arctic Reserve from dirty fossil fuel development »
